It can be a ton of fun to play on a team in an organized sports league but the fun can quickly come to a halt if you incur some sort of injury. No matter if your injury is something that will heal quickly, or if it takes you out of the game for the entire season, injuries are something that every athlete wants to avoid. Here are some steps that you can take to prevent sports injuries:

Protect Yourself

Depending on the sport, there is gear that is designed to keep you safe and injury free. For most sports, this equipment is not optional, but rather, mandatory. You will find that in many games, the referee will check players for the appropriate equipment before the game begins. This protects not only you as the player but it also protects the other players that are on the field as well. In soccer, players must wear shin guards to prevent a leg injury. Football players wear helmets to protect themselves when they get tackled and hockey players wear padding all over to protect them when they get hit, pushed into the boards or get hit by a puck.

Warm Up Routine

Before playing at a practice or a game, it is always recommended that you stretch and warm your body up before giving the game your full intensity. This warms up your muscles rather than putting immediate demand on them. You will prevent strains, tears, muscle pulls and much more if you take a few minutes before physical activity to warm up. Also, after a game or practice, cooling down by stretching and slowing your movement for a few minutes can help your muscles recover safely.

Understand The Rules Thoroughly

No matter what the sport is, it is important to know all of the rules of the game and what is expected of you as a player. Rules are designed to keep the game moving, and help teams keep things fair. However, rules are also designed to keep players from doing certain actions that would result in somebody getting hurt. For example, in many youth soccer games, children are not allowed to head the ball (bounce the ball off of their head). This is simply to prevent concussions from occurring. Adults are allowed to do this but they learn the proper way to do so and they are much more developed and able to handle the impact.

Be Aware

When on the ice or on a sports field, it is important to pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of where other people are. You want to win the game but you want to do so safely. If you end up running full speed into another player because you were not paying attention, this can hurt both you and the other player.

Respect Your Injuries

If you are recovering from an existing injury make sure your coach knows about this and be sure to sit out that game. You will be much more prone to another injury if you haven’t healed from the original injury. Not only that but you can become injured if you are favoring a certain body part or moving in a way that is different than normal because of a pain or an injury.

Playing sports can be extremely fun and competitive. However, getting injured isn’t fun for you and your team will have to learn to play without you. Be responsible when you play and follow these few rules in order to protect yourself and to also protect others that are playing along with you.

So What Does Heart Health Mean?

Consider how many times your heart beats, well over 2 billion times on an average. It is for this reason that you need to keep your heart healthy. The heart is responsible for carrying oxygen, hormones, energy, nutrients, and vital cells to other vital organs every second of every day. The heart also is keen on getting rid of waste products from the metabolism.

If your heart should cease beating all other vital organs, fail quickly. So it is essential to keep your heart-healthy and to function at optimum levels. But, how do you keep your heart healthy?

You would have to agree that the heart is an amazing, vital organ given all the responsibilities of the heart.

Never Abuse Your Heart

The heart takes a lot of abuse from many people. Hopefully, you are not harming your heart with a poor diet, no exercise or lack of exercise, smoking, drug, alcohol abuse, and obesity.

Maybe you inherited some “bad” genes, and heart problems run in your family history. Never compound your likelihood of inheriting heart difficulties with a poor diet, lack of a good exercise program, smoking, drugs, or alcohol.

One critical issue is atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Plaque builds up in the arteries brought on by lack of exercise and a poor diet high in fats.

When this plaque builds up in the main arteries and breaks apart, as it often does, a piece of floating plaque or cholesterol can cause you a stroke or heart attack.

High cholesterol increases your blood pressure and a high blood pressure can pre-empty a stroke or heart attack.

Your lifestyle change for the better increases your chances of preventing cardiovascular disease. Follow your doctor’s orders for prescribed medications to decrease your cholesterol levels. Speak with your doctor about a lifestyle change, including a healthy eating pattern and age appropriate exercise plan.

Ask your doctor if you can have, at least annually lab tests show cholesterol levels. Lab tests can pinpoint any health issues before they get out of hand.

In today’s society, both parents work. The reason for this comes out of the necessity to bring in an adequate amount of money to meet debt demands. A mother and father are the first to express concern about making the time to balance the needs of the family while balancing the budget and having the time and energy for both.

Set a Good Example for Your Kids

If you are a parent, you need to remember that your children learn by the example you set. Children are keen on observation and follow what parents do and say.

For example, if you are a couch potato in any spare time you have, your children are going to spend more time sitting, gaming, watching television, and take up more inactivity outlets.

This generation is full of electronics that grab the interest and attention of children everywhere. It seems as though all kids want to do is play with their electronic gadgets.

These sedentary activities do bodies no favors. Learn to limit your children’s time on television, kindles, iPhones, computers, and gaming consoles. Children these days love to be told to “Go to your room.”

Everyone Has 24 Hours in a Day

If you are a parent, you are the ones to instill in your kids the importance of physical fitness. Everyone has 24 hours in a day. The clue to making the time for physical fitness with the kids is how you schedule your time.

Allowing one hour out of 24 hours a day for moderate to vigorous activity every day helps all family members remain healthy and keep weights within a reasonable range. This time also allows for bonding time for parents and children.

This one hour allows for your kids to learn how important physical fitness is to you and your spouse. The kids may not want to comply, but once they do they will not know where the hour went and wanted more.

Do as much as you can outdoors. The fresh air is invigorating and gives parents and children a healthy appetite for all of the healthy foods you fix.

If you are at a loss for ideas, there are plenty of ways in which you incorporate one hour of fitness with the kids.

emergencies, work, deadlines, and unexpected visits from family and friends to mention a few.

You must meet your unique obligations so just rearrange your schedule and fit it in or spend extra time the next day doing what everyone loves to do in the way of exercise such as biking two hours instead of one hour.

What is ITP Awareness Month?

Many health conditions affect the daily lives of both people in the United States, and also people around the world. Some conditions are better known such as breast cancer and HIV, while other conditions may not have as much awareness. Blood disorders often fall into this category, as many people are unaware of the serious consequences these cause in patients’ lives.

ITP is one such disorder that often leaves sufferers and families feeling invisible since little is known to the general public and lack of knowledge can even be evident in many medical practices. A lack of visibility makes it difficult for this disease to obtain research funding and limits the treatments available. For this reason, ITP Awareness Month takes on additional importance, bringing public awareness and assets to a lesser known illness.

Understanding How Blood Works

In order to understand how ITP affects people, it is important to first understand how blood works. Blood is made of two primary parts: cells and plasma. The plasma is the liquid, consisting of multiple substances like fats and protein, but is primarily water. The cells are the working pieces, made up of red cells, white cells, and platelets. Red cells carry oxygen while white cells fight infection. Platelets are very tiny cells that work to stop bleeding. If a single part of your blood does not function correctly, it can have an effect on the entire system.

How ITP Affects Platelets

ITP stands for Immune Thrombocytopenia. Implied by the name, ITP is an immune disorder. As with better known immune disorders, this illness causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells. In the case of ITP, the healthy cells that are attacked are the body’s platelets. Since platelets are a vital part of clotting, problems with these cells can trigger a range of complications.

People with ITP are prone to bruises and purple spots on the skin. Signs of spontaneous bleeding, most skin conditions are mild. Many ITP patients complain of general fatigue and sometimes depression. More serious problems occur when low platelet counts begin to affect the digestive system, gastrointestinal system, or worse, the brain. Spontaneous hemorrhage caused be platelet deficiency in these areas can lead to serious complications including organ failure and even death.

ITP Treatment

Platelet counts offer a method to monitor, but not treat ITP. Normal counts should range from 150,000 to 400,000 per microliter of blood. ITP patients often have counts closer to 30,000, with a count of 10,000 indicating a serious condition and risk of catastrophic bleed. There is no known cure for ITP, but there are some treatments that have been shown to help treat symptoms and reduce the risk of fatalities.

The Mayo treatment describes the following therapies for ITP.

  • Immune globulin injections that increase blood count.
  • Steroid drugs that suppress the immune system as well as non-steroid immune suppressants.
  • Drugs that boost platelet production.

Severe cases of ITP that do not respond well to the above therapies may require additional treatment such as the surgical removal of the spleen or stronger experimental drugs with harsher side effects.

But any STD is generally going to be bad for your mental health just for issues of self-esteem. Physical illness always has an impact on the mind. When To Get Tested
With these things in mind, recommendations on when you should get tested include before engaging in intimate activity with a significant other, after engaging in intimate activity that you expect may be questionable, and as a general measure to establish your own clean bill of health. The latter can help you avoid difficult legal situations, while the other two have aspects of courtesy and caution defining them. It’s courteous in today’s day and age for you and your intimate partner to be open with one another, and know what your sexual health is like. It’s cautionary to get tested after the fact.

Good Advice
If you really want to avoid the risks, your best bet is to enter into a mutually committed and monogamous relationship. If neither of you have had sexual encounters before, it’s likely you won’t need testing at all–though this is still advisable just to ensure your sexual health is where you think it is. While having multiple partners is certainly something often pursued today, the fallout can be mind-altering, physically debilitating, and ultimately deadly. So get tested.

To eat healthier means to eat all the food groups in appropriate amounts and leaving the table feeling sufficiently full, meaning you do not exit the table with a “stuffed” stomach.

  • Eating healthy is a lifetime is your commitment for lifestyle changes
  • Eating healthy never constitutes eating even healthy foods until your seams split in your clothes.

Eating healthy means a better blood pressure, decreasing risks for heart disease and diabetes. You reduce the chance of other diseases due to obesity. Fats

The body requires some fat each day. Avoid saturated fats and turn to unsaturated fatty foods, for example, oily fish, and avocados. Healthy fats are necessary for healthy joints, hair, and skin.

Sugars

Sugars are contained naturally in some foods like fruits. Avoid white sugar, high fructose corn syrup and anything that relates to sugar (read food labels.) Too much sugar will help you gain weight; increase the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Too much sugar puts you at risk for other diseases.

You Can Manage Your Food Groups

Control your meal portion sizes depending on your age, and activity levels.

Eat fresh or fresh frozen foods and avoid canned foods that contain hidden sugars, and hidden sodium.

Eat foods by baking, broiling, grilling, steaming.

If you eat foods from mostly plant sources like fresh or frozen vegetables, fruits, whole grains and strictly limit your processed food choices, and red meats, you are feeding your body healthier.

Most people with this disease forget things that they have recently learned. It is also not uncommon to forget dates and events. Finally, if you are constantly asking people to give you the same information again and again, it could be a sign of Alzheimer’s.

For example, you could be in the present, but think that things from your life 20 years ago are occurring now. It is very easy for a person with Alzheimer’s to get stuck in the past. It can also be easy for you to forget where you are. When you have figured out where you are, you can struggle to remember how you got there.

Trouble Understanding Visual Images

There are some Alzheimer’s patients who struggle with visual images. If you have trouble reading or judging distance, it is a sign of Alzheimer’s. Also, if you struggle to determine colors or contrast, it is also cause for concern.

Trouble Having a Conversation

If you have Alzheimer’s disease, it can be difficult for you to engage in a conversation with other people. In the middle of the conversation, you can forget what you were talking about, resulting in a long pause. Also, it is not uncommon to repeat yourself often. Finally, it can be difficult to find the right word for certain objects. When you cannot think of the right word, you may be tempted to make up a word for the object yourself. For example, if you cannot remember the name for a refrigerator, you might call it a cold box.

Frequently Misplacing Objects

A common sign of Alzheimer’s is misplacing things often. Many people with this disease will put things away in strange places. If you lose something and your loved ones ask you to retrace your steps, you might not be able to remember where you just were.

Alzheimer’s disease can effect your brain in many ways. A mind that was once clear can often become foggy and confused.

What are Whole Grains?

Scientifically speaking, a whole grain is any grain from a cereal product that includes the bran, germ and endosperm of the product. Consumption of whole grains is important as they have a lot of nutritional benefits that contribute to lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, balancing blood sugar and more. Refined grains are a bit more processed and contain only the endosperm of the product. These products are not as beneficial due to their deficiencies in amino acids which occurs during processing. There are a number of different whole grains that you can add to your diet; each with their own nutritional benefit.

Bulgur Wheat

Different than the traditional wheat that you will find in store-bought loaves of bread, bulgur wheat is more like a rice product. It takes just a few minutes to cook with a bit of hot water and you can use it in a variety of salads or even as a breakfast food in place of oatmeal.

Millet

This whole grain has a corn-like taste and consistency and is actually used frequently in bird food mixtures. It is perfectly acceptable for humans to eat as well though. It works in place of rice in many dishes and comes packed with healthy fiber.

Freekeh

This is one whole grain you probably haven’t heard about before and that’s because it is relatively new to the supermarket scene. Freekeh is whole wheat that is harvested prematurely and it is then roasted and cracked before being used in a variety of recipes.

Barley

A commonly used whole grain, barley works well in recipes like soups and stews. It is about the size of a grain of rice but when cooked becomes very soft, almost like a very fluffy noodle. Barley is rich in B vitamins, fiber and can reduce cholesterol numbers.

Wheat Berries

This product is the wheat kernel in its whole form and can be consumed at this state. Very high in fiber, wheat berries take some time to cook. It is well worth it though thanks to the nutritional benefits that come with consuming this whole grain. The process of cooking the wheat berries is simple though, you just simmer them on the stovetop.

Buckwheat

Not an actual whole grain, buckwheat is usually grouped into the whole grain family even though it technically is a seed. Very fibrous, buckwheat is usually turned into a flour and then used in products like noodles or bread.

Benefits Of Whole Grains

There are countless benefits of eating whole grains each day as part of a healthy diet and unless you are someone who is sensitive to gluten, there is no real reason to avoid them. Not only do whole grains provide you with plenty of fiber to keep your digestive system working properly, whole grains pack a ton of energy that will keep you going all day long. For those people who are trying to lose weight, skipping the carbs and grains isn’t necessarily a great idea. You just want to make sure that you leave the processed grains at the store and opt for healthier, whole grains. You can actually lose weight (especially in your mid-section) thanks to whole grains as they help re-distribute fat in and on the body.
When shopping for a whole grain product you will want to thoroughly read the label to find out more about the product and what it contains. A product that is minimally processed and contains whole grains will say so and you should stick with these brands. You may also want to look closely for words such as unbleached, unprocessed, natural, etc.

A Strange Phenomenon

Strangely, suicide seems to be more prevalent in first-world countries, or countries who deal with more temperate and sustainable living conditions. Consider this map. On it you can see the distribution of suicides per population across the world. What you’ll notice is that many developed nations in the “First” or “Second” world have greater rates of suicide than nations in the “Third” world. Certainly the distribution isn’t even. Some first world countries have very few suicides, some third world countries (North Korea comes to mind) have worse rates of suicide. China, India, and Russia seem to be the three countries that have the greatest problem with this issue. Europe and the United States follow quickly thereafter. But in Africa, there is hardly any suicide. The southernmost tip is colored white, indicating the lowest rate.

That seems strange, doesn’t it? In a nation ripped apart by constant tribal contest, shifting regimes, and apartheid, suicide is at its lowest. The sun is always hot, lions, hyenas, and snakes abound, conflict is continuous, HIV rampantly plagues the country–and yet it has the lowest rate of suicide. What in the world is going on?

There’s a parable about a young girl who rescued a squirrel and peeled the nuts it liked so it didn’t have to exert itself. The squirrel’s teeth grew too long and it couldn’t eat, so it starved to death and died. Is this the solution to first and second-world suicide? Well, yes and no. See, the other thing you’re more likely to find in third world countries is close community connection. Because of the difficult circumstances which define life in these areas, people are forced to rely on one another. In this way a village is less like a small town in America, and more like a large family that’s centrally located. Everyone has a part to play, and everyone in the community cares about everybody else. There may be infamy, there may be aggrandized rumors, but what is fostered here is identity.

Identity

People know who they are, and what makes them worthwhile. They have a stationary mooring point. If you want to break it down, you could distill the concept to caring about your neighbor like you care for yourself. Now who does that in America today? Or Russia, or China, or most of Europe? The developing world seems caught up in catch as catch can, dog-eat-dog thinking, and the indefatigable “look out for number one” argument. All these things serve to do is isolate people from community and encourage selfishness, which naturally leads to depression. Let’s face it: everybody at their core has some dark nature which doesn’t reconcile with personal image. Without a community to be involved in, that inner darkness takes over, and it can be hard to find the will to live.
Meanwhile, when you’re in a community, in a group, with people who care, you’ve got a reason to exist. The best thing you can do to prevent suicide is reach out and include people. Make them part of something. Keep people from isolation if at all possible. Even the hermit must come to town for supplies; so chat him up at your general store. This helps prevent suicide.
