Symptoms of Gasteoparesis

Gastroparesis_Feature

Image is from dLife

Otherwise termed as delayed gastric emptying, gastroparesis is a medical condition characterized by a partial paralysis of the stomach. This paralysis leads to the food remaining in the stomach for periods longer than normal. In normal circumstances, the stomach moves food down the duodenum by contracting to push its content down the gut a process controlled by the vagus nerve. When this nerve is damaged, it is possible for gastroparesis to occur as the muscles of the stomach and small intestines shall not be carrying out their duties in the right manner.

Signs and symptoms

  • The key symptoms of gastroparesis are nausea and vomiting. Vomiting often occurs after meals. Sometimes, however, especially in severe gastroparesis, you may vomit even before taking in any food or fluids into the stomach. The cause of this is usually the accumulation of secretions inside the stomach. Since the stomach lacks the grinding action with this condition, the foods that you vomit will be in big chunks, and you can easily identify them.
  • At other times, you may experience bloating which may sometimes be accompanied by abdominal distension. Again, you will notice that you get full quicker than the normal way a factor that could lead to weight loss.
  • Abdominal pain is also another key symptom that you may present with if you have gastroparesis. The cause of the pain is however not clear.
  • Poor blood sugar control is another symptom of the condition
  • Heartburn too may accompany the condition.

Worth noting

Other than the sign and symptoms of gastroparesis, it is important to appreciate the diagnosis and the treatment.

Diagnosis

There are many methods of diagnosing gastroparesis. The most typical of the methods is the gastric emptying study. This study measures the emptying of food from the stomach. Here, you eat food which has a small radioactive material in it. A scanner is then put on the region around the stomach for some time to monitor the amount of radioactivity that would be taking place inside the stomach. For patients with gastroparesis, the food usually takes a relatively long time to get into the small intestines compared to a normal individual.

Another method of diagnosis is anthro-duodenal motility study. This study is however considered experimental and cannot be used in some patients. It basically measures the pressure that results from the contraction of the muscles of the small intestines and the stomach.

Treatment

There is a whole list of treatment of gastroparesis including diet, medication, as well as procedures which facilitate emptying of the stomach. The treatments have myriad end goals which include providing a diet with foods that are emptied easily, controlling the conditions which are known to aggravate gastroparesis, relieve the symptoms as well as maintaining adequate nutrition.

On a diet, emptying occurs faster when there is not much food in the stomach, and as such, it is urged that you take smaller portions though at shorter intervals. Besides, softer foods tend to require less grinding. It is important to note that fats trigger the body to release certain hormones that are an impediment to stomach emptying. As such, you should look to the direction of foods with low-fat content. Also, diets not so rich in fiber are recommended. Fiber is known to be responsible for the formation of bezoars as well as critical in slowing down the process of stomach emptying.

The above are some of the symptoms of gastroparesis together with its diagnosis and treatment. A comprehensive appreciation of the condition will take you a long way in managing it.

Causes of Group B Strep

GBS2

What is Group B Strep?

Group B strep are bacteria that can colonize in the vagina, rectal, and intestinal area of healthy adults and pregnant women. Statistically, about 25% of all healthy adults will at one time have a GBS infection.

While pregnant women do not often show symptoms of a GBS infection, there is a risk that they can transmit the infection to their newborn baby. Once transmitted, some newborns may develop complication which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and even sepsis, so infants who are at risk need to be monitored. The best way to prevent this is through early detection in the mother and administration of antibiotics to treat it.

Group B Strep infections can also occur in nonpregnant adults who suffer from chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, or cancer. Typically those over 65 are at higher risk, but the incident rates of GBS infection in nonpregnant adults has been steadily increasing throughout the years.

Causes of Group B Strep

Healthy people can carry Group B Strep in their body at any time, it can also come and go or can stay permanently.

GBS can be found in some pregnant women and if not treated can pass to their newborns. When newborns contract Group B Strep infection in the first week of life it is called early onset. For babies who are 1 to 3 weeks of age when they develop the disease, it is termed late-onset.

How Can Group B Strep be Transmitted?

Group B Strep is transmitted by a pregnant mother to their babies during a vaginal birth. Typically mothers who test positive will be given antibiotics during delivery to reduce the risk of transmission. This will occur in about 50% of mothers who have an active infection during birth.

Out of this 50%, only about 100 to 200 of these babies born will develop a GBS infection requiring treatment.

Who’s at Higher Risk for Group B Strep?

When it comes to having Group B Strep, the incident rates are higher among African Americans than Caucasians. While there are not many statistical differences with a mother becoming a GBS carrier, there are some instances where there is a higher risk of transmission to the infant, including:

  • Early onset of labor
  • Fever during labor and delivery
  • An active urinary tract infection
  • Premature rupture of the membranes
  • Previous Group B Strep infection
  • Positive GBS culture after 35 weeks or pregnancy

Symptoms of GBS Infection

When an active Group B Strep infection is present, there can be some symptoms that can range from mild to severe. Some of the symptoms to watch out for include.

In Newborns

  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Bluish color
  • limpness
  • Stiffness
  • Breath complications
  • Diarrhea
  • Fussiness
  • Problems with heart rate and blood pressure
  • Problems feeding

In Adults

  • Skin infections
  • Sepsis
  • Lung infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Meningitis
  • Joint infections

Treatment of GBS

While the most common form of treatment is to treat the mother with antibiotics during labor to prevent the transmission, once contracted a GBS infection is typically treated with IV antibiotics and sometimes a surgical procedure if a bone or joint infection is present.

While GBS infections can result in severe complications, they are often preventable in newborns with routine maternal screening which makes prenatal care essential to protecting your newborn against such infections.

Significance of International Group B Strep Awareness Month

AwarenessMonth_Twitter

July the Awareness Month for Strep B

July is the awareness month that helps educate expecting moms and individuals about Strep B. Strep B stands for Streptococcus a dangerous bacterium that can cause illness in newborns and individuals with weak and even strong immune systems.

Most of the time there are no symptoms presents when a person is infected with the bacterial infection, which is why it is essential for expecting moms to be screened for it before they give birth. If the infection is not caught before the newborn arrives and it is present, the infection can pass right onto the newborn during delivery. If a newborn ends up catching the illness there is potential for it to become serious and even fatal.

Why is Strep B so dangerous?

Strep B is so dangerous because it can turn into meningitis, sepsis and pneumonia without proper diagnoses and treatment. People with strong immune systems can typically survive and fight off these types of infections, but newborn babies during the first weeks of life tend to struggle. This is due to their weakened immune systems, and why so many babies who contract the Strep B illness pass away. Other health problems that can arise from suffering from a Strep B infection are hearing loss, and mental and physical disabilities.

How is Strep B tested?

Expecting moms and individuals are tested for Strep B through a genital swab test. Sometimes testing can be done with a simple urine or blood test. Pregnant women get this test done by their OBGYN or midwife at 37 weeks of pregnancy. Those who suspect they may have it can ask their family doctor to test for the infection.

With that said, the only true way an individual can know for themselves that they could be potentially infected with the bacterium is by experiencing symptoms. Without symptoms, individuals don’t usually suspect any can of infection until it becomes so serious staying in the hospital is essential for intense treatment to help rid the infection from the body.

What are some of the symptoms of the infection?

  • Infection setting into an area of skin
  • Painful urination with a UTI
  • Constant fever with chills
  • Lethargy
  • Skin rashes or infections
  • Vaginal discharge and discomforts
  • Inflammation in the lungs or joints of the body
  • Irritability or moodiness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches and dizziness if the infection spreads to the brain

Where does the Strep B bacterium live within the body?

Strep B bacterium is found in the mouth, throat, genital area, rectum and sometimes even bloodstream of the body. It is passed through bodily fluid contact, or simply encountering the bacteria hanging out on an individual’s skin. If an individual does become infected with Strep B, thankfully there are treatments that work effectively with curing the illness.

What are the antibiotics for most useful for treating the infection?

The antibiotics most commonly used for treating the Strep B infection are ampicillin, penicillin, cefazolin and clindamycin. These medications are provided orally, but with serious infection they are given through IV in the hospital. You can only get these medications through prescriptions from doctors.

End Thoughts for the Significance of Strep B Awareness Month?

The best way to save lives from Strep B is by becoming educated and educating others about the infection. July’s awareness month is the perfect opportunity to get the word out there to help promote proper screening for it in individuals of all ages. After all, everyone deserves to know about potentially life threatening infections that are preventable through proper screening and testing and treatable with simple antibiotics.

National Scleroderma Awareness Month

SclerodermaAwareness_web_cover_photo_2017

Image is from Scleroderma Foundation

There are many awareness months you may observe, and one of these is National Scleroderma Awareness Month. This is observed every month of June and is usually led by organizations such as the Scleroderma Foundation. The month-long awareness campaign can be participated not only by scleroderma patients, but also by anyone who wishes to help.

What Is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a skin disease which makes it impossible for patients to move some parts of their body like hands, feet, neck, and so on. Sclero means “hard” and derma means “skin,” so scleroderma is the hardening of skin similar with leprosy, but different in a way that it does not decay. However, the disease stays forever as there is still no permanent cure for it.

So far, it’s not clear what causes scleroderma. It just appears to anyone without any signs. Moreover, many people wouldn’t know what kind of disease it is because it comes on suddenly. You will just find yourself unable to move your fingers, as though there is an outside force stopping you from moving them.

More and more people are suffering from scleroderma. Even so, this is still considered a rare disease. It is so rare that even some doctors are not familiar with it.

The problem with scleroderma is that it does not only attack the skin outside, but also inside our body, and such condition may affect our internal organs such as digestive system, kidneys, and even the heart.

Why is there a Campaign if the Disease is Rare?

It’s true that scleroderma is a very rare disease; however, the number of such cases is ever increasing. In the United States, there are 240 cases of scleroderma for every 1 million in the population, and while this number seems small, the disease should be recognized.

Although there are some studies being conducted to discover the cure for it, researchers find it difficult to gather information because of the lack of sources such as patient history and testimonials. This means that even some people who already suffer from scleroderma are not aware they already have it.

This is why there is a month-long awareness campaign that needs to be observed every month of June in order to encourage patients to share their experience and collaborate with organizations that propagate information about scleroderma.

If you don’t suffer from scleroderma, you can participate in the campaign to help others. You can learn about this disease and teach others about it, too. The information about scleroderma may be limited, but getting more people involved in this awareness campaign can surely contribute a lot in gathering more information.

What Is for Scleroderma Patients?

People who suffer from scleroderma feel helpless because of their condition, and need community support. If you are a scleroderma patient, you can’t go solo, as you need the help of others as it’s not good to feel isolated.

National Scleroderma Awareness Month is the best chance for you to meet other people with the same condition. In this way, you can share experience among one another and boost your confidence to move on with life. Moreover, scleroderma patients may get updates about the latest in scleroderma research, medicine, or technology.

Scleroderma is not a new disease as it so happens that this disease is unknown to many. This is why there is a need for awareness month such as National Scleroderma Awareness Month in order to educate many people about it.

Image is from Lupus Foundation of America

Millions of people suffer with the autoimmune disease known as Lupus. This chronic inflammatory disease affects a person’s immune system. Rather than fighting to protect your body from viruses and bacteria, the immune system actually attacks various organs and tissues. Since, Lupus can affect different parts of the body, its symptoms vary greatly from person to person. The intensity of these symptoms also varies greatly, but most people experience flares, which will worsen and improve randomly.

Below is a look at some of the main symptoms of Lupus.

  • Anemia – Characterized by lower than normal levels of red blood cells in the body’s blood.
  • Chest Pain – Chest pain that occurs when taking a deep breathe. This can be caused by an inflammation of the pleura membrane that surrounds the lungs, also referred to as Pleurisy.
  • Dry or Swollen Eyes – Lupus can cause dry eyes or even swelling and pain in the area surrounding the eyes.
  • Fatigue – Lupus oftentimes causes extreme fatigue that is typically more severe during and immediately after a flare.
  • Fever – Many patients experience unexplainable fevers.
  • Hair Loss – Depending on which organs and tissues are affected, Lupus may cause hair loss.
  • Headaches – Many Lupus patient complain of severe headaches, which may be accompanied by confusion or even memory loss.
  • Joint Pain – Lupus can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness of joints in the areas affected by the disease,
  • Photosensitivity – Some Lupus patients also experience a sensitivity to the sun and the light. In these cases, it is best to avoid direct sunlight when possible.
  • Rash – Many Lupus patients, but not all, experience a distinguishable rash on their face. This rash typically takes on a butterfly shape and spreads from the bridge of the nose outwards over both cheeks.
  • Raynaud’s Phenomenon – This phenomenon causes a person’s fingers and/or toes to turn a whitish or bluish color when subjected to intense stress or extreme colds.
  • Shortness of Breath – In addition to chest pain, Lupus patients may experience periods of shortness of breath.
  • Skin Lesions – These types of lesions are most common among those whose Lupus affects their skin. Overexposure to direct sunlight should be avoided because this can worsen the lesions.
  • Swelling – Lupus patients commonly show signs of swelling in their feet and legs.
  • Unusual Blood Clotting – When Lupus affect the blood cells, a person may experience unusual blood clotting.
  • Ulcers – Some people with Lupus also experience frequent ulcers in the nose and/or mouth.

Lupus is sometime referred to as “The Great Imitator” because its symptoms are very similar to several other medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid problems and fibromyalgia. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician to discuss these concerns.

How to Reduce the Spread of Germs

kid washing hands with mom

Image is from Healthy Tennessee

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

You need to worry about microscopic bugs, the bugs you cannot see with the human eye. These microscopic germs you cannot see are the carriers of a lot of disease and illness.

Deadly, Simple Routines

You never stop to think about how clean the person’s hands were who used your shopping cart before you.

  • What did that person do last before grabbing the shopping cart you are now holding in your hands?
  • Did that person have their hands in their mouth?
  • Did the person go to the restroom and not wash their hands?
  • Did the person sneeze or cough into their hands?

While many people wash their hands before leaving a restroom, there are still some people who do not routinely wash their hands.

As sad as this fact is, many people still visit the bathroom and do not wash their hands after they finish using the toilet. If this makes you cringe, it should, because this scenario is all too true.

What if someone had the flu symptoms and was coughing and sneezing into their hands and then placed their hands on your shopping cart where your hands now rest?

Oops, you have an itchy nose and reach a hand up to scratch your face with a hand that was holding someone’s sneeze or a cough.

We cannot see these microscopic germs, but these bacteria are present in and on everything we touch. You can feel pretty comfortable in your home; however, when you are out in the public domain with strangers all around, you must be cautious and think the very worst you can to stay relatively healthy.

Be Aware of Your Environment

While you cannot eliminate these nasty germs from your surroundings, you can take some steps significantly decreasing unknown microscopic bacteria in your environment by using some plain and simple common sense.

  • Carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in a pocket or purse and use it before and after using a shopping cart, before eating, after leaving a public restroom and just because it is time to disinfect your hands.
  • If a store supplies bacterial wipes at cart corrals, grab some wipes and cleanse the cart handles before using. You can carry wipes wherever you go.
  • When a store display a bottle of hand sanitizer, use some.
  • When you have to sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your upper arm or crook of your elbow, and use sanitizer afterward.
  • A sneeze is believed to travel, at least, 400 miles per hour. sanitizer afterward.
  • If you have the flu symptoms or a severe cold, never go out into the public, stay home.
  • If you must go out and you are ill, wear a mask.
  • Be sure to get your pneumonia and flu shot when due.
  • Never share eating or drinking utensils.
  • See your doctor if you are ill and not getting better.
  • Never use anything that you think could be contaminated by germs like towels, washcloths, and makeup.

How to Wash Your Hands in a Public Restroom.

  1. Turn on the faucet with a piece of dry paper towel.
  2. Wash hands well with warm soapy water.
  3. Rinse hands.
  4. Do not turn faucets off until you dry your hands well.
  5. Grab a piece of dry paper towel to turn the faucet handles off.

People leave germs on the faucet handles after using the toilet. These bacteria can penetrate wet paper towels and go back onto your hands.

Using common sense is the best way to help eliminate the spread of germs.

Understanding sleep deprivation

Chronic Sleep Deprivation: More Harmful Than You Might Think

Not only can sleep deprivation can cause serious damage to your body over the long-term, but it can cause you to lose your mind too.

You probably have noticed that, when you don’t get enough sleep, your thoughts are not as clear as normal and you feel grumpy. Although you might think that not getting enough sleep is no big deal, in the long run, you actually pay quite a price when you are sleep deprived. Chronic sleep deprivation significantly affects your mental functioning, performance and health.

Why Do We Need to Sleep?

Although sleep is as important to your physical and emotional health as is eating and drinking, researchers still do not quite understand why people need to sleep. In fact, the question of why humans sleep is one of the biggest mysteries in biology. Researchers theorize that the brain may need sleep to store the day’s memories or that sleep regulates the body’s hormones.

How Harmful Is Sleep Deprivation, Really?

Even though the question of why humans sleep is not completely understood, there is no question that sleep deprivation is extremely harmful both physically and mentally. Research shows that losing sleep can cause psychosis, long-term memory problems and can impair cognitive functioning. Other studies have found that sleep deprivation can lead to physical ailments, such as high blood pressure, weight gain and impaired immune system functioning.

What Causes Sleep Deprivation?

There is not one specific cause of sleep deprivation. Actually, many things can cause you to not get enough sleep. You might have too many daily stresses. Health issues, such as sleep apnea, diabetes and heartburn can all cause you to not be able to sleep well. Mental health problems, such as bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety can all interfere with sleep. Taking care of an infant, working in shifts or the need to finish work or school projects may also lead to a lack of shut-eye.

What Can I Do If I Cannot Sleep Well?

The cure for sleep difficulties can often be found in your lifestyle choices and daily routines. Try the following tips to help improve your sleep and leave you feeling emotionally and physically balanced.

Regular Sleep Schedule

One of the most important strategies for improving your sleep is to get on a regular sleep schedule. The reason this is important is because your body has a natural 24-hour clock, called a circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm tells your body when to sleep, wake and eat. This clock is linked to the 24-hour cycle of the sun. Typically, your circadian rhythm will cause you to wake in the morning after 8 hours of sleep and feel tired after about 16 hours of being awake. Sometimes, your circadian rhythm can become disrupted, causing your sleep patterns to become abnormal. Therefore, getting back on track with your body’s natural clock is vital for overcoming insomnia. Going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time every morning can help your body’s natural clock become more regular.

Exercise

Regular exercisers tend to spend more time in the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep, according to the latest research. Exercise also helps you feel less sleepy during the day and feel better overall. Just make sure that you exercise at least several hours before bedtime as vigorous exercise can interfere with sleep hormones. It can take months of regular exercise before you notice the full effects on your sleep, so be patient and stick with it.

Importance on sleep

the-importance-of-sleep_53042c45ad4f8_w1500

Infographic from visual.ly

Lack Of Sleep Has Serious Side Effects

Refrain from sleeping for twenty-four hours. How do you feel? Your eyes are droopy, the world has a strange appearance, you see things out of the corner of your eye. At times there is a strange giddiness that borders on madness; then it’s left by snappy anger. There are many types of fatigue; that which accompanies a deliberate effort to transcend sleep is usually a pleasant kind of weariness, one which knows real sleep is soon on the horizon. But sustaining this pattern of activity can cause brain damage. In fact, sleep is integral to a number of components which pertain to good health, including:

  • Bodily Health
  • Healthy Weight
  • Clearheaded
  • Proper Adolescent Development
  • Muscular Reconstruction
  • Sickness Rehabilitation
  • Cerebral Development

A Natural “High”

Sleep deprivation has effects on the body and mind which bear a striking similarity to alcohol abuse or marijuana ingestion. When you drink too much or get too high, your mental reasoning faculties diminish. You become impaired. A continual pattern of diminished rest leads to mental damage in the same way continuously binge drinking or marijuana smoking does. As a matter of fact, many people in America today combine all three of these conditions, and the ultimate damage is substantial. Unfortunately, sometimes working environments force the lifestyle on individuals without their realizing it.

Consider this scenario: a young man comes from an impoverished family and manages to obtain a G.E.D., but before he can go to college his single mom takes ill, and he becomes responsible for winning the house’s bread. But he’s an honest man and won’t stoop to dealing drugs or anything illegal. Unfortunately, the recessive economy has pushed him into a selection of jobs that don’t pay more than ten dollars an hour. Still, he can get forty hours a week–that’s $1600 a month! But that won’t quite cut it, as there’s a mortgage on the house, and food, and regular maintenance items, and gasoline. He really needs about $3200 a month. Well, that can be done sustainably for a year or so, if the young man just works double-time. And so this is precisely what he does. He works a thirteen hour shift six days a week, which comes to 78 hours weekly, ballooning to 82 depending on how long he has to stay after his shift. He’s been getting four hours of sleep a night for the last six months now, because Working Johnny has taken to the drink as well. It’s all he’s got.

Getting The Proper Rest

Many Americans have stumbled into similar situations. There are solutions, however. One of the best ones is to go through your daily schedule and see what activities can be cut, and replaced with sleep. If none can, and your situation really is so desperate that a half hour nap here or there isn’t possible, then you need to look at transcending your working situation. It may seem like there is only one job available for you right now, but as a matter of fact, there are quite a few in today’s market.

Healthy Brain Development

You may have to sacrifice your sleep for your children, though; their rest is more integral to healthy cerebral development. The brain grows during sleep. REM, or Rapid Eye Movement, represents a kind of “mental download” time wherein the mind processes the events of your day. Part of this explains where dreams come from; though there are other, deeper aspects involved in dreaming. In any event, the mental activity of sleep is ultimately integral to health for anyone; so get your rest!

How Does Sleep Deprivation relates to Heart health

Premier-banner-sleep-deprivation-relates-to-heart-health

When it comes to sleep deprivation, you have to be careful. On the one hand there are constantly more and more people who stress the ideas of productivity, efficiency, and even accomplishment to suggest sleep is not important. However, when you think about the actual facts and figures surrounding sleep and sleep deprivation then you can see how important it actually is to get a full night of rest. Consider the following few items and how important sleep can be for you to be at your fullest, especially if you have any sort of heart issues in your family or with you personally.

General Recovery

When people are asleep at night, then their body is doing less. You are obviously still alive and your entire system is still capable of doing things, but when your body goes into sleep mode at night then you get to rest because your body isn’t doing as much and doesn’t have to support as much. Your heart rate will slow, your major systems will relax, and you can spend a period of many hours just laying there while the rest of your body heals and repairs itself as you prepare for the next day. However, without having the chance to rest fully and be able to recover, then you could wind up injured and even the minor bumps and bruises won’t be able to fully heal. The worst part of this overall equation however, is that if you can’t sleep your heart will not ever get the chance to rest overnight. It will keep working overtime and can start to burn itself out from overuse.

General Body Shape And Weight Loss

One of the major side effects of having any sort of schedule is you can keep your body and eating habits in a normal and constant cycle. This usually means you will be more fit and more active, generally speaking. However, when someone is not on a normal scale then they can run into multiple problems as their body tries to adjust to the lack of sleep. When you don’t get as many winks overnight as you are ideally supposed to, you can wind up having a decreased and inefficient metabolism. This will lead you to carrying extra weight and looking down upon exercise as you simply don’t have the energy to participate.

Sleep Means Peace

One of the biggest things that people forget about is general irritability. When you start to consider someone with high blood pressure and general stress issues, you are thinking about someone who simply does not get enough rest in a given day. That is why if you are trying to find a way to keep blood pressure low, then you should consider getting rest and relaxation. The best form of which is sleep. The converse and not getting enough sleep would lead to higher irritability, less patience, and someone being more likely to blow up and become enraged. That would definitely not be good for heart and blood pressure regulation.

Whatever the specific reason you are looking for, the fact of the matter is you must sleep. And, because human beings can seriously run into some major problems if they aren’t able to sleep, you shouldn’t really be playing around with your system in that regard anyways. But, if you are going to cut back on sleep for one reason or another, then you need to be aware of the potential negative side effects and how not getting enough sleep could lead to some major problems within your cardiovascular system and within your heart overall as well.

How Does Your Heart Work

Cannot Replicate Nature Exactly

Men of science try to replicate the heart and its function; somehow mechanical hearts do not seem to stand the test of time. Heart transplants have come a very long way in the last 20-years, and there are now more successful organ transplants than there are failures as seen when heart transplants first emerged on the medical scene. The heart is the largest and strongest muscle in your body.

The Largest Muscle in the Human Body

Did you know that it takes, two pumps for the heart to work, one positioned on the left side and one on the right side?

If it were not for the heart and its function, all the rest of your vital organs could not do their job or live without the oxygen-rich blood the heart circulates throughout your body, while one chamber of your heart squeezes the other chamber relaxes in sequence.

The Left Chamber

The role of the left heart chamber or pump is to receive blood from the lungs full of precious oxygen and deliver it through the arteries to all parts of the body. Nutrients accompany this oxygen-rich blood to feed vital organs.

The Right Chamber

The function of the right chamber of the heart (pump) is to receive used blood from your body and deliver it back to the lungs. This second process is responsible for ridding the body of carbon dioxide and picking up new freshly oxygenated blood.

Four Valves

Each chamber of the heart has two valves, four valves altogether. These valves control the blood flow into and out of the heart chambers. These valves help to monitor the amount of blood to and from the lungs. Another job of these heart valves is to keep blood always flowing forward, never backward. Once these valves open to let blood out of the chamber, they close so that the blood does not seep back into the heart.

It is vital that your heart works like a good precision timepiece as your body relies upon the constant pumping action of the heart in its remarkable job of supplying your body with oxygen.

An Unparalleled Electrical System

The heart does not just consist of two pumps; the heart offers you so much more, such as its electrical system prompting the chamber into a synchronized movement. The heart’s electrical impulses control your heart rhythm. This heart rate is what medical professionals listen to when they want to see or hear the rhythm of your heart if the doctor orders an EKG. This rhythm controls how fast your heart beats.

As long as your heart stays healthy, the normal heart rate and rhythm keep going. If the electrical impulses mess up, it causes your heart not to beat in an even pattern, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or it may present an irregular beat.

Health issues cause a heart pattern to beat irregularly, such as,

  • A Viral Infection
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heavy Alcohol Consumption
  • Narrowed arteries
  • Malfunctioning Heart Valves
  • Congenital Heart Defect
