How Diabetes Can Affect Your Eyes

examining-eye

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when your blood sugar is too high. This occurs because the disease makes it difficult for your body to make enough insulin or use it properly. There are two types of diabetes. Type I diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes and it occurs in children and young adults. This type occurs when the body doesn’t make insulin. The second type is Type II diabetes. This type can occur at any age and it is caused if your body doesn’t make insulin or if it doesn’t use it well.

If not treated properly, diabetes can cause serious health problems including:

  • Kidney disease
  • Food problems
  • Nerve damage
  • Dental problems
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Eye problems

What Is Diabetic Eye Disease?

Diabetic eye disease is more than one disease that can affect people who suffer from diabetes. People who don’t keep their diabetes under control are at greater risk of eye complications. Also, each of the conditions can cause serious vision loss and even blindness. If you suffer from diabetes, it is important that you understand each of the diseases and what they can do to your eyes.

  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss and blindness in people who have diabetes. The condition affects the blood vessels in the retina, which lines the back of the eye. If your blood sugar is often high, it can cause damage to the retina’s tiny blood vessels. This can result in the blood vessels bleeding or leaking fluid which can cause distortions in the vision. When the condition progresses, it can result in scarring and cell loss in the retina, causing complete blindness. In many cases, vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy is irreversible. Early detection and treatment can reduce your risk of going blind by 95 percent.
  • Diabetic Macular Edema (DME): DME often occurs in people who have diabetic retinopathy. While it often occurs when the disease progresses, it can occur at any time. It is a build-up of fluid in the macula. This part of the eye is used for seeing straight ahead to read, drive, and recognize faces. Half of the people who develop diabetic retinopathy develop DME. If left untreated, it can cause vision loss.
  • Cataracts: A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. When a person has cataracts, their natural lens would be removed and replaced with an artificial one. Anyone can develop cataracts, however, people with diabetes are two to five times more likely to develop cataracts than those who aren’t diabetic.
  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma damages the eye’s optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is often the result of high pressure in the eye, and it is very common in people with diabetes. Studies have shown that adults who suffer from diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma than those who don’t have the disease.

Preventing Diabetic Eye Disease

The only way to prevent diabetic eye disease is to be vigilant when it comes to your blood sugar levels. You should also see your eye doctor every six months. The sooner a problem is detected, the sooner it can be treated, saving your eyesight. Many of the diabetic eye diseases won’t show any symptoms at first, therefore, it is very important that you see your eye doctor regularly.

Diabetes can wreak havoc on many of the body’s systems including your vision. The only way to prevent permanent vision loss and blindness is to check your blood sugar levels regularly and take the necessary steps to keep it at a healthy level.

Improving your Lung Health

479288058-older-couple-outdoors-summer_737_350_54_c1

Improving Your Lung Health

The lungs play the important role of feeding oxygen to your blood, the oxygen you need to burn glucose and produce energy. They’re also responsible for getting riding of the byproduct – carbon dioxide. This makes them a very vital facilitator of the life sustaining metabolic process.

Like most parts of the human body, your lungs are built for high performance scenarios that we rarely subject ourselves to. For instance, a great deal of the typical daily activities will rarely push your lungs above the 50 percent capacity mark.

A Normal Lifestyle Isn’t Good Enough for Your Lungs

If your normal daily schedule doesn’t push the lungs to the limit, it means that you aren’t exercising your lungs and putting each and every corner into good use. This could encourage the buildup of toxins, environmental pollutants and other alien bodies since the lungs aren’t self-cleaning.

Here are some basic tips to help your lungs workout and improve their health and the ability to perform when under pressure.

Practice Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing is what professional singers use to increase their lung capacity and stir up those impressive melodies for longer. Good news is you don’t really have to sing to practice this technique. It is as easy as paying attention to you diaphragm and actively using it as you breath. The result is deeper breaths that force your lungs to inhale and exhale to their maximum capacity.

Mind Your Posture

The lungs are soft squishy organs. They have no structural integrity to help them maintain their shape and size at all times. This means that the bad posture could easily compress your lungs and limit their efficiency. You can easily remedy this by occasionally leaning back in a chair with your back stretched up and breathing deeply by raising your diaphragm and the chest.

Apart from this, ensure that you maintain an upright posture when sitting or while walking. This will ensure that your lungs occupy their full volume and you don’t end up compressing some sections into inactivity.

Don’t Hold Back Your Laughter

Laughing is a great way to exercise your diaphragm and abdominal muscles that control the lungs. Every time you lough until your sides ache, you are expelling most of the stale air out of your lungs and letting more fresh air into all parts of your lungs. Laughing hard is actually good for your lungs.

Leading an active life is the best way to keep all parts of your body healthy. A brisk walk, a jog, a walk up the stairs time in the gym will definitely pump up your breathing rate. The harder you push yourself the harder your lungs work and flex to meet the air exchange demand. The heightened activity is not only good for your heart but also perfect your mood, overall productivity and well-being.

If you cannot set aside special time to work out, incorporate some moderate to intense activities into your schedule. Walk up a decent flight of stairs instead of taking the lift. Walk to the hotel for lunch instead of taking a cab or driving. The little extras you do will go a long way into making your lungs healthier.

Apart from just working out your lungs, you should also be keen on what goes into them. Keep off cigarettes and other smoking related drugs. Ensure that your air conditioning is clean and avoid dust and contaminated environments at all conditions.

October 4th Is Walk And Bike To School Day

Logo_WBTS

Times Do Change

As a parent have you ever heard your grandmother or grandfather say to you, “Why when I was a kid, I walked to school every day, all year, in the rain, blizzards, and hot sun and it did not kill me?”

Walking or biking to school is excellent exercise and good for the kids to do at least once in a while.

This October 4th is not a new idea. This idea formed over 20 years ago with the sole purpose of celebrating health and the benefits of walking or biking to and from school for individual students. Instead of using a vehicle to and from school, students are given a chance to participate in active transportation to and from school on this day anually.

At any rate, October 4, 2017, is now set aside internationally, yes internationally, as a day where children are encouraged to walk or bike to school. This event is recognized globally by over 40 countries including the United States and Canada. Check with your school to see what events and surprises your school planned for October 4th.

So parents, if you do not trust the world we live in, and with good reason, maybe you can fulfill this day by walking or biking along with your child to school. If your school has individual plans, you will not want to miss the excitement with your family in attendance.

After all, this event is set in place for some reasons, such as,

  • Good exercise
  • Parents get outside with their children and teach children about pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • Reduces the amount of cars on the road and at schools
  • Helps to bond families, children, the community, and the school together
  • Preserves the environment
  • Enhances healthy lifestyles

It is a proven fact that children who walk or ride a bike to school and are physically active before the bell rings for classes are better prepared for class, they perform better in class, behaviors improve, and attention is improved.

Jump On Board and Enjoy This Special Day

Some schools plan to have students register for this event and inform parents, students, and the community through banners, flyers, information sent home, and in local newspapers.

There are many different things various schools do such as planning photo shoots with students, parents, and school staff.
Some dedicate the whole day to fitness and wellness. Schools may host bar-b-ques, picnics, or potlucks promoting nutritious food choices.

Some schools designate the whole month of October with weekly activities set aside

Thousands of school districts report that every year, there is an ever-growing interest and participation on October 4th by parents and children from a 20-year-old idea, made possible by school principals, physical education instructors, and teachers gladly promoting this event every year.

How do Communities Participate?

  • Children travel to and from school in groups or with parents
  • Choosing safe routes to and from school
  • Walking or biking on designated crosswalks
  • Utilizing crossing guards
  • Walking or biking on streets where speeds set lower
  • Walking or biking on sidewalks where there is less busy traffic
  • Instituting frequent information to the community so people who are diving can be made aware of the importance of October 4th and be ever-mindful of more children walking or riding bikes on that day

Set October 4th aside on your calendar to get outside with your child and get some fantastic exercise in the crisp and lovely fall colors. October 4th is the day you leave your car at home and walk or bike to school with a family.

The Stunningly Made Heart

1453814365797

If your heart skips beats, has an irregular beat, you have congestive heart failure, and many other issues, you can say that your heart is not healthy.

Other disease diagnoses can shorten your life, however, when this primary vital organ is not working well, your other vital organs suffer as well.

Never Figure, Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Do you take the opinion that if anything, including your heart, is out of your sight, you simply do not think about all the work your heart does in your lifetime? That is until you start showing symptoms of a malfunctioning heart.

So What Does Heart Health Mean?

Consider how many times your heart beats, well over 2 billion times on an average. It is for this reason that you need to keep your heart healthy. The heart is responsible for carrying oxygen, hormones, energy, nutrients, and vital cells to other vital organs every second of every day. The heart also is keen on getting rid of waste products from the metabolism.

If your heart should cease beating all other vital organs, fail quickly. So it is essential to keep your heart-healthy and to function at optimum levels. But, how do you keep your heart healthy?

You would have to agree that the heart is an amazing, vital organ given all the responsibilities of the heart.

Never Abuse Your Heart

The heart takes a lot of abuse from many people. Hopefully, you are not harming your heart with a poor diet, no exercise or lack of exercise, smoking, drug, alcohol abuse, and obesity.

Maybe you inherited some “bad” genes, and heart problems run in your family history. Never compound your likelihood of inheriting heart difficulties with a poor diet, lack of a good exercise program, smoking, drugs, or alcohol.

One critical issue is atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Plaque builds up in the arteries brought on by lack of exercise and a poor diet high in fats.

When this plaque builds up in the main arteries and breaks apart, as it often does, a piece of floating plaque or cholesterol can cause you a stroke or heart attack.

High cholesterol increases your blood pressure and a high blood pressure can pre-empty a stroke or heart attack.

Take Responsibility for Your Heart Health

No one including your doctor will be responsible for your heart’s health; only you can make the necessary changes for a healthier heart.

Devote yourself to a healthy lifestyle as early as possible in your life your ability to maintain heart health. It is never too late to change your way of living through a forever lifestyle change.

Your lifestyle change for the better increases your chances of preventing cardiovascular disease. Follow your doctor’s orders for prescribed medications to decrease your cholesterol levels. Speak with your doctor about a lifestyle change, including a healthy eating pattern and age appropriate exercise plan.

Ask your doctor if you can have, at least annually lab tests show cholesterol levels. Lab tests can pinpoint any health issues before they get out of hand.

If your doctor has told you that you have damage to your heart, you can still help your heart remain as healthy as possible by,

  • Following doctor’s orders
  • Healthy foods
  • Weight management within your ideal body weight
  • Medication
  • Frequent physical check-ups
  • Possible mechanical heart support

In Conclusion,

It is never too late to get on the right path towards heart health with,

  • Frequent doctor visits
  • Lab tests
  • Healthy eating for life
  • An age appropriate exercise plan
  • Medication as ordered
  • Losing weight
  • Maintaining an appropriate weight

Difference Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

Screen-Shot-2015-09-08-at-11.03.27-AM

Image is from Diabetes Research

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is characterized by, among other symptoms, a high concentration of sugar in the blood. With the myriad of disorders, the beta cells located in the pancreas find it hard to produce enough insulin to assist in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Diabetes occurs in two types, type 1 and type 2. Type one is caused by an autoimmune reaction that usually occurs in the pancreas while insulin resistance characterizes type 2. Type 2 can develop and result in the loss of beta cells. Both types of diabetes are chronic and incurable. However, they are treatable with insulin injections and dietary adjustments.

Diabetes is often seen in those who are over 30 years of age. The number of people who are diagnosed with these conditions keeps rising each day. This is attributed to the unhealthy lifestyles and dietary decisions that they take up. It is imperative to have some information on these conditions as it will be easy then to help the patients lead a better life. To get to know about these two closely related diseases, you must learn the difference between the two. Usually, people tend to confuse the two types of diabetes. However, they have different causes, and as such, different treatments. Taking medication for one type if you have the other, can be detrimental to your health and even lead to death in some instances.

Test for insulin levels

To begin with, you must discern the difference between the two types of diabetes. First, the level of the c-peptide of type 1 diabetes is very low while I type 2, the same is either normal or elevated. The level of c-peptides is a determinant of insulin levels in the blood. It is a more reliable way than just measuring the level of insulin itself.

Let’s look at the functional difference between diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2

Type 1 diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, insulin is no longer produced by the pancreas since the beta cells have been destroyed through the process of autoimmune response. This is, essentially, to say the person’s body has rebelled against them and, particularly their pancreas, leading to the destruction of something that is desperately needed by the body. Without insulin, it ‘s hard for your cells to absorb the sugar into the bloodstream. This basically means the cells will be starved. If your body lacks insulin, your cells will no longer function properly, or worse, stop working at all. The people with diabetes in this category need to get regular insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes

People with Type 2 diabetes have almost similar effects as type 1s although the type 2 patient gets the effect for a different reason. Here, the individual’s body is still producing. However, the insulin may not be absorbed properly. At other times, the absorbed insulin may not be sufficient for the amount of sugar present in the blood. Unlike with type 1, the patient in this type of diabetes may not even need insulin at all. Here, the primary factor that causes it is lifestyle choices including the kind of food you take. A significant percentage of people with type 2 are overweight though are factors have a hand too. The person often takes food high in calories and lives a sedentary lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes can, in many cases, be readily managed.

Understanding the Swine Flu

strain1

Image is from Flowing Data

Obtaining A Diagnosis

The only way to accurately diagnose swine flu is through a flu test. This is because the symptoms of swine flu look exactly the same as those found in conventional strains of influenza. Even differences of severity aren’t always indicators of one strain or another. While it is possible to see increased symptomatic characteristics stemming from swine flu, it’s just as possible to acquire this strain and feel as though you’ve contracted a regular bout of the flu. How you are affected will depend largely upon your personal constitution.

The extremely young and extremely old, like with conventional strains of the flu, will be at increased risk; likely experiencing more severe symptoms. This is because older and younger populations have immune systems which aren’t as strong as those in the prime of life. That said, if you live an unhealthy lifestyle replete with regular contact to diverse people groups, lack of exercise, and a ubiquity of vice (like smoking and drinking), you’re at an increased risk of contracting more severe influenza strains.

A Distinct History

There are actually quite a few different kinds of swine flu, including:

  • H1N1
  • H1N2
  • H2N1
  • H3N1
  • H3N2
  • H2N3

Primarily, the strain commonly referred to as “Swine Flu” is the H1N1 virus. This is that which caused a pandemic which quickly became global seven years ago, in 2009. Since then, this strain of flu has become seasonal in humans, though it still regularly circulates in swine populations. Thankfully, if you’re planning on eating pork, so long as any pork products you consume have been properly prepared, you won’t get the virus. Proper preparation includes cooking; so if you like your bacon soft and rubbery, you might have to give that up to avoid swine flu.

Avoiding Swine Flu

While properly prepared pork will not get you sick, it’s very possible to acquire the virus through poorly prepared pork products. If you can tone down your pork intake during flu season, it’s a good idea; even though you likely won’t catch the flu this way. It’s more likely to get transmitted by a sneeze, a cough, a loud phlegmy laugh, or contacting a door handle/table/hand-rail that’s been touched by an infected individual. Regular hygiene practices go a long way toward preventing influenza. That means washing your hands when you’ve come into contact with areas that may have been compromised, eating a diet high in non-processed foods that include fruits and vegetables, regularly exercising, and retaining a high level of fluids.

Additional Preventative Measures

Getting a swine flu vaccine can definitely help reduce your risk of contracting this specific strain of the flu. But to get that vaccine, you should be advised that peak health is to be recommended. A vaccine initiates an immune system response which bears some characteristics of the sickness itself. This is because an inert (or weakened) antigen is injected into the body, giving the immune system a chance to deal with it and prepare for a future incursion of the same.

Times Of Maximum Risk

Flu season conventionally begins toward the end of September, though it can begin as early as late August. It usually lasts through early spring. Conventionally, you’ll find that influenza season picks up at the end of Summer/the middle of Autumn. Several things which contribute are regular vacation travels, the new school year, and holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving where disparate people groups regularly mingle. For you and your family, retaining good eating and fitness habits, as well as a proper inoculation regimen, are great ways to combat this increasingly prominent strain of the influenza virus.

4 Illnesses That Are Common in the Winter

grippewelle

Images is from Live and Learn

Learn about the most common winter illnesses and what you can do to fight them.

As the leaves began to fall off the trees and temperatures drop, illnesses such as the flu peak. Many viruses are more likely to spread in the winter. There are several reasons for this. Dry cold air makes it easier for viruses to get into your nasal passages and some germs, such as influenza, are more stable and stay in the air longer when the air is dry and cold. Plus, more people are indoors in the winter. Being indoors with all the doors and windows shut make it more likely that you will be exposed to germs. Here are some of the most common winter illnesses and ways that you can prevent them.

Flu

Influenza, also called the flu is a respiratory virus that is caused by influenza. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the flu virus is at its peak from November through March in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu is prevalent from May through September.

Symptoms of the flu include body aches, high fever, coughing, sore throat and runny nose. Flu is contagious and spreads from person to person by sneezing and coughing. It may also spread through infected surfaces. Populations most susceptible to serious complications from the flu include the elderly and very young as well as those with impaired immune systems.

The best way to prevent the flu is to make sure that you and everyone in your house is vaccinated against the flu. The flu can be treated with Tamiflu if it is diagnosed within 48 hours. Otherwise, the illness has to run its course.

Asthma

Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms and causes wheezing and shortness of breath. Allergens are often a major contributor to asthma. Being indoors leads to breathing in mold, dust and dander, all of which are asthma triggers. Wind and rain also stir up allergens. Working out in the cold weather can also exacerbate asthma, making it more difficult to breathe. Ways to deal with asthma in the winter include:

  • Understand and avoid your triggers-If you are allergic to dust mites or mold, keep your house cool and dry.
  • Exercise indoors
  • Cover your face when you go outdoors

Norovirus

Noroviruses, also known as the “winter vomiting bug” is notorious for ruining cruise passenger’s vacations and causing entire ships to turn back around for port. Noroviruses strike not only cruise passengers, but those on dry land, as well. It is common on cruise ships due to the fact that they are highly contagious. Noroviruses spread through contaminated food and surfaces. Cruise ships provide the perfect setting for noroviruses due to the large number of people confined to a relatively small area. The symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. The best way to prevent norovirus is to wash your hands frequently.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is the irritation and swelling of the air passages of the lungs. This illness most often occurs in winter and is often a complication of another illness, such as the flu or asthma. Frequent coughing is the most common symptom of bronchitis. Although it is usually not a serious illness in healthy individuals, it can lead to pneumonia in certain individuals. If the condition does not go away in two weeks, contact your health care physician. To reduce the risk of bronchitis, wash your hands frequently and get vaccinated for the flu.

Understanding sleep deprivation

Chronic Sleep Deprivation: More Harmful Than You Might Think

Not only can sleep deprivation can cause serious damage to your body over the long-term, but it can cause you to lose your mind too.

You probably have noticed that, when you don’t get enough sleep, your thoughts are not as clear as normal and you feel grumpy. Although you might think that not getting enough sleep is no big deal, in the long run, you actually pay quite a price when you are sleep deprived. Chronic sleep deprivation significantly affects your mental functioning, performance and health.

Why Do We Need to Sleep?

Although sleep is as important to your physical and emotional health as is eating and drinking, researchers still do not quite understand why people need to sleep. In fact, the question of why humans sleep is one of the biggest mysteries in biology. Researchers theorize that the brain may need sleep to store the day’s memories or that sleep regulates the body’s hormones.

How Harmful Is Sleep Deprivation, Really?

Even though the question of why humans sleep is not completely understood, there is no question that sleep deprivation is extremely harmful both physically and mentally. Research shows that losing sleep can cause psychosis, long-term memory problems and can impair cognitive functioning. Other studies have found that sleep deprivation can lead to physical ailments, such as high blood pressure, weight gain and impaired immune system functioning.

What Causes Sleep Deprivation?

There is not one specific cause of sleep deprivation. Actually, many things can cause you to not get enough sleep. You might have too many daily stresses. Health issues, such as sleep apnea, diabetes and heartburn can all cause you to not be able to sleep well. Mental health problems, such as bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety can all interfere with sleep. Taking care of an infant, working in shifts or the need to finish work or school projects may also lead to a lack of shut-eye.

What Can I Do If I Cannot Sleep Well?

The cure for sleep difficulties can often be found in your lifestyle choices and daily routines. Try the following tips to help improve your sleep and leave you feeling emotionally and physically balanced.

Regular Sleep Schedule

One of the most important strategies for improving your sleep is to get on a regular sleep schedule. The reason this is important is because your body has a natural 24-hour clock, called a circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm tells your body when to sleep, wake and eat. This clock is linked to the 24-hour cycle of the sun. Typically, your circadian rhythm will cause you to wake in the morning after 8 hours of sleep and feel tired after about 16 hours of being awake. Sometimes, your circadian rhythm can become disrupted, causing your sleep patterns to become abnormal. Therefore, getting back on track with your body’s natural clock is vital for overcoming insomnia. Going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time every morning can help your body’s natural clock become more regular.

Exercise

Regular exercisers tend to spend more time in the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep, according to the latest research. Exercise also helps you feel less sleepy during the day and feel better overall. Just make sure that you exercise at least several hours before bedtime as vigorous exercise can interfere with sleep hormones. It can take months of regular exercise before you notice the full effects on your sleep, so be patient and stick with it.

Lack Of Sleep Has Serious Side Effects

Refrain from sleeping for twenty-four hours. How do you feel? Your eyes are droopy, the world has a strange appearance, you see things out of the corner of your eye. At times there is a strange giddiness that borders on madness; then it’s left by snappy anger. There are many types of fatigue; that which accompanies a deliberate effort to transcend sleep is usually a pleasant kind of weariness, one which knows real sleep is soon on the horizon. But sustaining this pattern of activity can cause brain damage. In fact, sleep is integral to a number of components which pertain to good health, including:

  • Bodily Health
  • Healthy Weight
  • Clearheaded
  • Proper Adolescent Development
  • Muscular Reconstruction
  • Sickness Rehabilitation
  • Cerebral Development

A Natural “High”

Sleep deprivation has effects on the body and mind which bear a striking similarity to alcohol abuse or marijuana ingestion. When you drink too much or get too high, your mental reasoning faculties diminish. You become impaired. A continual pattern of diminished rest leads to mental damage in the same way continuously binge drinking or marijuana smoking does. As a matter of fact, many people in America today combine all three of these conditions, and the ultimate damage is substantial. Unfortunately, sometimes working environments force the lifestyle on individuals without their realizing it.

Consider this scenario: a young man comes from an impoverished family and manages to obtain a G.E.D., but before he can go to college his single mom takes ill, and he becomes responsible for winning the house’s bread. But he’s an honest man and won’t stoop to dealing drugs or anything illegal. Unfortunately, the recessive economy has pushed him into a selection of jobs that don’t pay more than ten dollars an hour. Still, he can get forty hours a week–that’s $1600 a month! But that won’t quite cut it, as there’s a mortgage on the house, and food, and regular maintenance items, and gasoline. He really needs about $3200 a month. Well, that can be done sustainably for a year or so, if the young man just works double-time. And so this is precisely what he does. He works a thirteen hour shift six days a week, which comes to 78 hours weekly, ballooning to 82 depending on how long he has to stay after his shift. He’s been getting four hours of sleep a night for the last six months now, because Working Johnny has taken to the drink as well. It’s all he’s got.

Getting The Proper Rest

Many Americans have stumbled into similar situations. There are solutions, however. One of the best ones is to go through your daily schedule and see what activities can be cut, and replaced with sleep. If none can, and your situation really is so desperate that a half hour nap here or there isn’t possible, then you need to look at transcending your working situation. It may seem like there is only one job available for you right now, but as a matter of fact, there are quite a few in today’s market.

Healthy Brain Development

You may have to sacrifice your sleep for your children, though; their rest is more integral to healthy cerebral development. The brain grows during sleep. REM, or Rapid Eye Movement, represents a kind of “mental download” time wherein the mind processes the events of your day. Part of this explains where dreams come from; though there are other, deeper aspects involved in dreaming. In any event, the mental activity of sleep is ultimately integral to health for anyone; so get your rest!
