Predictive Genetic Test for Type 2 Diabetes Now Being Implemented in COVID-19 Patient Care Protocols

~DIABETESpredict® evaluates type 2 diabetes risk as studies indicate a correlation between diabetes and COVID-19 severity~

GREENVILLE, SC January 19, 2021  – DIABETESpredict®, a first of its kind predictive genetic test for type 2 diabetes, is now being administered to help improve patient outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent study on the bidirectional relationship of type 2 diabetes and COVID-19, patients with type 2 diabetes are predisposed to adverse clinical outcomes from the COVID-19 virus. In addition, many COVID-19 patients are found to develop new onset diabetes after infection (1). DIABETESpredict® proactively determines a patient’s type 2 diabetes genetic risk. It then provides physicians with individualized lifestyle and diet recommendations for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes, helping to reduce the probability of severe infection by COVID-19 or post infection disease onset.

A leading molecular diagnostics laboratory, Premier Medical Laboratory Services, recently introduced the DIABETESpredict® test to the US as the first ever predictive genetic test for type 2 diabetes. Originally introduced in Europe and in Mexico, this test was developed by the European company, Patia in collaboration with world leading doctors and scientists of Harvard and MIT. The test is a disruptive innovation for the advancement of diabetes prevention and care which has become increasingly more valuable for patient management due to the complex pathophysiology of COVID-19 and diabetes (2).

“No two patients are the same, that’s why, after rigorous analysis, we offer customized lifestyle recommendations to make DIABETESpredict® as effective as possible for each unique person,” states Dr. Mirella Zulueta, medical director at Patia. “Patia has analyzed in detail the results of the largest scientific studies and meta-analyses of the human genome in diabetics. Altogether such studies collected information from more than 110,000 diabetic and non-diabetic people to identify the genetic variants most associated with type 2 diabetes. We are now finding a second use for the DIABETESpredict test in providing vital information for healthcare professionals to help lessen the impact of COVID-19 in relation to diabetes.”

The mortality rate in COVID-19 patients with diabetic hyperglycemia is found to be seven times higher than patients with no diabetes and no hyperglycemia (3). Having the ability to know sooner than ever before who is at risk for diabetes paired with access to lifestyle plans specifically made for individual patients based on their individual genetic profiles could hold a profound impact on the world’s overall health.

DIABETESpredict® and COVID-19 recommendations:

  • Determine risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • If risk probability is medium/high monitor for fasting glycemia, acute hyperglycemia, and inflammation
  • Implement customized DIABETESpredict® treatment recommendations for improved patient outcomes

DIABETESpredict® is available in the US through Premier Medical Laboratory Services. Family practitioners are encouraged to add this to their bloodwork during routine physicals as well as COVID-19 patient treatment to utilize the life changing knowledge that DIABETESpredict® provides.

Call 1.877.335.2455 or contact sales@premedinc.com for more information on how you can offer your patients the groundbreaking DIABETESpredict® test.

New All In One COVID-19 Test Can Additionally Detect Influenza A and Influenza B Strands

~Just in Time for The Worst of Flu Season and Second Wave of Coronavirus~

GREENVILLE, SC Jan. 6 – Along with temperatures dropping and COVID-19 cases resurging, this 2020 fall and winter also ushers in flu season, heightening the chances that a patient may be infected not only with strands of the flu or COVID-19, but could be experiencing a coinfection of both. Now, Premier Medical Laboratory Services (PMLS), a leading molecular diagnostics laboratory, is offering a test that can detect or rule out SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Influenza A, and Influenza B along with RSV with a single nasal swab to help fight the possibility of what some have called, a “twindemic.”

“Many of the symptoms of COVID-19, Flu A, Flu B, and RSV are the similar since they are all respiratory viruses,” said Kevin Murdock Founder of Premier Medical Laboratory Services. “We know the last thing a patient wants, who already doesn’t feel well, is to have to provide multiple samples and to wait for various test results to come back. We always strive not only to provide the most accurate, cutting edge diagnostic testing, but also to keep the quality of the patient experience in mind.”

With the recent increase in coronavirus cases, the CDC’s latest forecast predicts that up to 2,300,000 new cases will be reported by the week ending in December 12, 2020. PMLS has prepared for this new surge in cases and is now a leading laboratory in the nation for COVID-19 testing with the capacity to process up to 300,000 tests per day. As an award winning lab, they have some of the quickest result turnaround times available, with 92% of their test results provided in under 24 hours.

“Timing is an extremely important element in regaining control over this pandemic,” said Murdock. “The ability to test patients simultaneously for each of these respiratory viruses will help to save time for healthcare professionals so that they’ll know as soon as possible the proper plan to aid their patients back to health. Knowing sooner which courses of action to take could be critical for a patient and for our nation as a whole during this winter.”

A patient can request from their healthcare provider that PMLS’ multiplex test is available at their hospital or doctor’s office.

Labs Like Premier Medical Laboratory Services Now Seeing Increased Demand for Various Molecular Diagnostic Tests

~As social distancing measures have decreased, demand for medical tests other than COVID-19 increase~

GREENVILLE, SC September 23, 2020  – At the onset of the pandemic the nation began to practice social distancing, and subsequently, many stopped scheduling visits with their doctors. Laboratories like Premier Medical Laboratory Services suddenly pivoted much of their efforts into providing a high volume of testing for COVID-19. Now, as more businesses and schools have reopened, less of the population has continued to practice extreme social distancing measures. Accordingly, more patients are visiting their physicians’ offices again for routine check-ups and other healthcare needs other than the Coronavirus.

With this, PMLS, recently named one of the Top Genetic Diagnostic Companies of 2020, says that they are beginning to see a rise in demand for tests that they offer to address various medical diagnostic needs aside from COVID-19. Some of these tests included are their pharmacogenomics, advanced cardiovascular testing, and their women’s health & wellness and diabetes panels.

“We are continuing to process up to 50,000 COVID-19 tests per day, but are glad to see an increase in orders for the other tests we provide,” said Kevin Murdock founder of Premier Medical Laboratory Services. “We know that our tests offer vital insight to physicians so that they can best plan the proper care for their patients.”

Including their portfolio of COVID-19 assays, all of PMLS’ tests processed at their 40,000 sqft laboratory are performed with the latest in science and technology to provide the most advanced and comprehensive testing results. For example, PMLS’s MDDiabeticPro panel includes the revolutionary DIABETESpredict test, which is a first of its kind predictive genetic test for type 2 diabetes developed in collaboration with world leading doctors and scientists of Harvard and MIT. The DIABETESpredict test is expected to mark a new era in diabetes prevention and care through evaluating the risk of the disease onset by examining individual genetic profiles and is currently only available to the US through PMLS.

PMLS’s cardiovascular panel, MDHeartPro, offers a more complete look at a patient’s cardiovascular health than the standard lipid profile that is commonly ordered.  In addition to the standard lipid panel, MDHeartPro includes tests that identify plaque buildup, lipid particle size, hereditary factors, and other advanced risk factors.

At PMLS’s fully COLA and CLIA regulated laboratory many of their processes are automated with cutting-edge laboratory equipment. Using a cloud based-laboratory information management system, OnGen, PMLS communicates real-time results to physicians directly from their lab equipment. Because of this, PMLS is able to process hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 tests per month while increasing the testing capacity for their other molecular diagnostic offerings without compromising accuracy or their quick turnaround time of results.

Premier Medical Laboratory Services Doubles Antibody Test Capacity with OnGen Cloud-based Tech

GREENVILLE, SC July 15, 2020 – As a growing amount of COVID-19 antibody tests are being administered, antibody testing efficiency is increasingly critical. Premier Medical Laboratory Services (PMLS), a leading commercial diagnostic laboratory, has found a way to increase their antibody testing capacity to now process 50,000 per day while decreasing their turnaround time – providing results in under 48 hours. PMLS has reached this level of efficiency by implementing a cloud-based laboratory information management system (LIMS), OnGen. OnGen LIMS interfaces directly with laboratory equipment, automating data entry, quality control, scheduling, and billing, streamlining their workflow.

Because OnGen integrates seamlessly with any electronic medical record system (EMR) that hospitals and physicians’ offices currently use, testing orders can be entered and communicated directly to laboratory instruments with modules that provide real-time results. That’s why PMLS is able to deliver antibody test results with an expedited turnaround time to physicians for their patients. Laboratories across the nation can drastically expand their workflow and bring antibody testing as well as COVID-19 PCR testing to an exponentially higher amount of patients that need it by implementing OnGen’s advanced LIMS.

“OnGen is the technology solution that we found most effective in automating many of our lab processes that would otherwise be done manually,” Kevin Murdock, Founder of Premier Medical Laboratory said. “We encourage other laboratories to use OnGen LIMS so that we can all better serve physicians who are providing vital COVID-19 antibody and PCR testing in battle against this pandemic.”

PMLS’s antibody test, or Immunoglobulin G/Immunoglobulin M enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IgG/IgM ELISA), was granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) one month ago. It requires a blood draw administered by a physician or staff which is then sent to PMLS for the IgG/IgM ELISA. Results are provided within 24 – 48 hours upon lab receipt of the testing sample and determine if there is a presence of antibodies in the patient sample – indicating that the patient had a past infection of the COVID-19 virus and could potentially be immune to a reinfection. PMLS plans to increase their antibody testing capacity with OnGen to 100,000 serologic tests per day in the next two weeks.

Information about OnGen LIMS:

  • fully HIPAA compliant
  • Can seamlessly work with any Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system
  • Has a physician outreach portal to ensure doctors can freely access information for their patients
  • Allows administrators to set multiple levels of access so unauthorized access of patient information is blocked
  • Includes modules that automate quality control, scheduling, testing and billing

Leading South Carolina Laboratory, Premier Medical Laboratory Services, Now Providing COVID-19 Antibody Testing

GREENVILLE, SC June 9, 2020 – Premier Medical Laboratory Services, a top commercial diagnostic laboratory is now expanding their COVID-19 testing portfolio by adding antibody testing to their offerings. With a recent increase in their testing capacity to 620,000 COVID-19 tests per month, the addition of their antibody test, or Immunoglobulin G/Immunoglobulin M enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IgG/IgM ELISA), aids in their mission to help the state of South Carolina and the US at large safely reopen.

Premier Medical Laboratory Services’ (PMLS) antibody testing, which was granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), requires a blood draw administered by a physician or staff which is then sent to PMLS for the IgG/IgM ELISA. Results are provided within 24 – 48 hours upon lab receipt of the testing sample and determine if there is a presence of antibodies in the patient sample – indicating that the patient had a past infection of the COVID-19 virus and could potentially be immune to a reinfection.

“Because gathering data on COVID-19 to understand its complexities is so important in overcoming it, we are dedicated to offering every effective testing resource we can,” said Kevin Murdock, founder of PMLS. “We are determined in doing our part for the safe reopening of America and will continue meeting COVID-19 head-on with the latest in technology and science.”

An ideal candidate for the antibody test is someone who believes they already have had the COVID-19 virus. Anyone currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should not take an antibody test, but rather, should take the PCR test to determine if they currently have the COVID-19 virus. According to the CDC, antibody testing should be conducted 1-3 weeks after infection, since it can take that amount of time for the body to produce antibodies.

Aside from determining potential immunity from a reinfection of COVID-19, the other benefits to receiving antibody testing are:

  • To help guide doctors in providing the correct clinical care for specific patient needs
  • To help provide researchers and healthcare professionals further understanding of COVID-19
  • To determine a patient’s ability to donate antibody-rich plasma which can be used in convalescent plasma therapy, potentially helping other patients overcome COVID-19
  • To help in developing a vaccine for COVID-19

Along with antibody testing, Premier Medical Laboratory Services also recently introduced (in partnership with Vessel Medical) a comprehensive COVID-19 safety program to equip businesses with the latest in testing, safety, and monitoring for returning employees to work – MDHealthPro Opening Up America Again.

Hospitals and physicians offices can provide COVID-19 PCR testing or antibody testing by clicking on the following link for easy account activation with PMLS: www.premedinc.com/covid-19.
