South Carolina Laboratory Capable of Processing a Groundbreaking 620,000 COVID-19 Tests Per Month

~As states open, Premier Medical Laboratory Services provides unprecedented testing capacity for South Carolina~

GREENVILLE, SC May 7, 2020 – Premier Medical Laboratory Services (PMLS), the first commercial laboratory in South Carolina to be validated for COVID-19 testing, has expanded their hours of operation to meet current testing demands. Now capable of processing 20,000 COVID-19 tests per day or up to 620,000 per month, the laboratory has added employee shifts to remain operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Among South Carolina laboratories, this is a groundbreaking amount of test results being processed daily within the state.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, PMLS has progressively increased their testing capacity by adding staff, equipment, and by using cutting edge technology including OnGen, a cloud-based Laboratory Information System (LIS) which allows their testing orders to be entered and communicated directly to laboratory instruments. These measures combined have more than quadrupled the volume of tests that PMLS successfully processes each day.

PMLS’s COVID-19 test is a part of their comprehensive respiratory pathogen test. It is developed to determine the full causation for symptoms that a patient may be experiencing, as COVID-19 can exist as a co-infection. These results deliver vital knowledge – ruling out or detecting multiple causative pathogens and allowing a physician to provide the most suitable care for their patients during this critical time, helping to flatten the curve.

“As everyone prepares for opening up America again, we have adapted quickly so we can be prepared with the level of testing capacity needed for South Carolina,” said Kevin Murdock Founder of Premier Medical Laboratory Services. “We join everyone in wanting this pandemic to be controlled as soon as possible, so we are using the latest in technology and science to meet COVID-19 testing demands as they evolve.”

PMLS is working under FDA regulations to soon provide an antibody test which will indicate a patient that has had COVID-19 in the past and is potentially immune to a reinfection of the virus. As gathering data on COVID-19 to understand its complexities is of utmost importance in overcoming it, PMLS is dedicated to making this antibody test accessible to South Carolina as soon as possible.

As a reminder, Premier Medical Laboratory Services does not conduct specimen collection for their tests. Samples are collected via a specimen collection kit ordered by a healthcare professional and then sent to PMLS for processing. Results of this molecular diagnostic test are provided within 24 – 48 hours upon lab receipt of the testing sample – Lead times subject to extend due to volume.

Hospitals and physicians’ offices can provide COVID-19 testing by clicking on the following link for easy account activation with PMLS: www.premedinc.com/covid-19. For more information, please visit www.PreMedInc.com or call 1.877.335.2455.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Awareness

Substance abuse awareness ribbon with related keywords

Alcohol has been shown to statistically cause more teenage fatalities than all other drugs put together.

Because alcohol has been shown to be strongly correlated with the three leading causes of death among young adults – suicide, murder, and accidents , such as car accidents – the threat that alcohol poses to young populations needs to be taken more seriously.

The health care costs of both drug and alcohol abuse are staggering as well. The National Institute of Drug Abuse found that alcohol abuse costs $27 billion every year in health care costs and drug abuse collectively costs $37 billion for illicit and prescription drug abuse combined. Those numbers are worrying.

More worrying still is the fact that these numbers are only a drop in the bucket compared to the overall costs that alcohol and drug abuse take on a nation in terms of lost productivity, increased crime, and as already alluded to skyrocketing health care costs.

When you add up these three costs (lower productivity, higher crime, and higher health care costs) you’re talking about nearly a quarter-trillion or $249 billion annually for alcohol abuse and over a quarter trillion for illicit and prescription drugs combined.

The Monitoring the Future study’s results show some promising trends as well as areas for continued concern with respect to today’s youth and tomorrow’s future. Alcohol use among 12th graders, for instance, has gone down about 7% over the last 3 years whereas illicit drug use has pretty much stayed steady with about half of 12th graders indulging in illicit drugs.

Fortunately, the number of 8th graders choosing to partake in alcohol use has gone down since 2013 when it was 27.80% – today that number is 22.80%, which means that fewer than one in four 8th graders is choosing to use alcohol. The number of 12th graders using marijuana, though, has remained fairly constant at around half (~48%) over the last three years.

The frightening reality for many substance abuse, mental health experts, politicians, and concerned parents is that youngsters that drink are more than 7 times more likely to partake in other illicit drugs. And get this: A kid who drinks who 50 times more likely to use cocaine illicitly and on a recreational basis than another kid who abstains from alcohol altogether through his or her middle school, high school, and early adult years.

Recent data shows that among the nearly 4 million people who were treated in 2005 for substance abuse a full 2.4 million were also treated for alcohol abuse. That’s because there’s a big comorbidity (or co-occurrence) between the two kinds of abuse. There also happens to be a big correlation between drug abuse, alcohol abuse, anxiety disorders, and depression.

This is still a chicken or the egg question that psychologists and mental health professionals are trying to work out but it’s currently believed that anxiety disorders, major depression, or bipolar disorder could predispose certain people to start using certain illicit substances and alcohol in order to self medicate. This is never appropriate and a mental health professional and substance abuse counselor should always be called in to help.

Help is needed more desperately than ever because more Americans are falling prey to drug and alcohol abuse. Worryingly, a full 40% of violent crime has been associated with alcohol use, according to the United States Department of Justice. In a single year (2007) alcohol-related traffic fatalities topped 10,000 people. That’s more than should ever succumb to these kinds of accidents.

If you or a loved one are struggled with drug abuse or alcohol abuse contact a substance abuse counselor today for help.

Understanding Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy also known as biologic therapy is a type of treatment that induces or enhances the body’s immune system instead of using medicines. This process is usually done to treat cancer by stimulating the immune system to become more active in attacking cancer cells or by sustaining the body with man-made immune system proteins.

How Does the Immune System Work?

The immune system is the sum of all components that work together to maintain the normal functions of body organs. These components include but not limited to white blood cells, nutrients, and organ functions.

When the surface of skin is wounded, white blood cells work to heal the wound by eliminating foreign substances. When the wound is larger, it requires a lot of white blood cells to cover the wounded area. This will result in the appearance of lymph nodes near the area. This is where white blood cells build up.

In the process of eliminating foreign substances such as bacteria, germs, and cancer cells, body nutrients such as vitamin C may work to repair the damaged tissues and collagen.

Meanwhile, body organs work together to prevent disease-causing agents to stay inside the body. Kidney works to filter toxins, which are excreted through the urine. Digestive system separate important substances needed by the body from waste. The heart continues to pump blood to carry white blood cells and red blood cells needed to heal wounds.

These are some examples of how the immune system work. The immune system is not a single substance nor a single organ. It is an integration of several body systems that work together to protect the body from certain diseases.

The Immune System as Treatment for Cancer

There still no single medicine that can cure cancer. So far, an effective way to suppress the spread of cancer cells is through the immune system. The immune system serves as the police inside the body. It detects unwanted substances that may infect any area of the body.

However, cancer cells are not detected by the immune system as they appear to be like normal cells by of sending signals to the PD-1 CTLA-4 receptors. These signals confuse the immune system. This is why even a healthy body with strong immune system cannot prevent cancer.

Nonetheless, there is a way to make cancer cells detected by the immune system. The use of immunotherapy drugs such as inhibitors can disrupt the signals that are sent by cancer cells. This will let the cancer cells exposed to the immune system. Cytokines and cancer vaccines are examples of these inhibitors.

Monoclonal Antibodies

Monoclonal antibodies are man-made immune system proteins. These proteins attach to cancer cells thereby flagging the cancer cells to be recognized by the immune system. On the other hand, monoclonal antibodies work to block the abnormal proteins in cancer cells, so they can also be used to prevent cancer cells from spreading.

These are examples of man-made antibodies:

  • Pembrolizumab (Keytruda)
  • Nivolumab (Opdivo)
  • Ipilimumab (Yervoy)

Non-Specific Immunotherapies

Non-specific immunotherapies are used to boost the immune system to directly stop and kill cancer cells. Examples of these are interferons and interleukin’s.

The use of the immune system is still the most recommended method in the treatment of cancer. It only needs the help of inhibitors to let it work properly on the target. The problem with the immune system is that it is not intelligent enough to keep cancer cells from being hidden. This is why there is still a need for human intervention with the help of man-made antibodies.

Signs to look for with Alzheimers

Alzheimer’s is a very serious brain disease that can cause a slow decline in the patient’s cognitive skills. Over time, the patient’s memory, reasoning skills, and thinking can begin to decline. As the disease progresses, the disease can get so severe that the patient doesn’t recognize their family members and they don’t even know who they are. If you are caring for a loved one and you are concerned that they may be in early stages of the disease, you should know what symptoms to look for. It is important to understand that every person is different. The combination of symptoms can differ from person to person.

#1 Memory Loss That Effects Their Daily Life

Forgetfulness is a normal sign of aging, however, if your loved one becomes especially forgetful, it could be cause for concern. There are certain memory issues that a person with Alzheimer’s will have that aren’t a normal part of aging.

  • Forgetting recently learned information
  • Forgetting important dates or events
  • Relying on memory aids often such as notes or electronic devices
  • Asking to have the same information repeated again and again
  • Forgetting names or important dates but then remembering them later

#2 Problems With Planning and Problem Solving

It is not uncommon for a person with Alzheimer’s to suddenly have trouble making plans. Something simple like following a recipe or understanding the directions to a board game can become difficult. People with Alzheimer’s also struggle with numbers, therefore, paying bills and balancing their checkbook can become difficult. Finally, a person with Alzheimer’s may need to concentrate much longer to do things that were once easy for them.

#3 Familiar Tasks Suddenly Become Difficult

When a person is suffering from Alzheimer’s, familiar tasks that they have been doing for years can become difficult. This can include driving to a familiar location, remembering their daily routine, and forgetting how to use their household appliances.

#4 Confusion With Time or Place

People with Alzheimer’s often lose track of time. This doesn’t mean that they forget what day of the week it is. People who suffer from this disease will often forget what year and even what decade it is. Also, they might have trouble understanding if something is happening immediately. Finally, it is not uncommon for a person to go somewhere and forget how they got there.

#5 Difficulty Seeing and Understanding Visual Images

Many people who suffer from Alzheimer’s have problems with their vision. This doesn’t mean needing a pair of reading glasses. Alzheimer’s patients often have trouble judging distance. They also have trouble determining color or contrast. These vision changes can make it dangerous for a person with Alzheimer’s to drive a vehicle.

#6 Sudden Issues With Speaking

As a person gets older, it is not uncommon for them to have trouble finding the right word, however, if they are in the middle of a conversation and suddenly forget what they were talking about, it is a serious cause for concern. People with Alzheimer’s often repeat themselves because they forgot what they just said. Finally, many Alzheimer’s patients will call things by the wrong name because they cannot remember the correct one. For example, if the person says little clock instead of watch, it is cause for concern.

#7 Difficulty Retracing Steps

Alzheimer’s patients will often misplace things. While this is common for many people, Alzheimer’s will make it difficult for them to remember where they just were so that they can retrace their steps.

Some people confuse old age with Alzheimer’s, however, when it is Alzheimer’s, the symptoms are more serious and disruptive to their life.

Signs of Drug Addiction

When a person is addicted to drugs, the last thing that they want is for certain friends and family members to know about it. Addicts look at anyone who is not doing drugs with them as someone who will judge them. They will also look at these people as a person who will try to make them stop, which they likely won’t want to. If you have a loved one who you think may be an addict, it is a good idea to know the signs of drug abuse. The sooner you know, the sooner you can help.

Physical Changes

When a person is addicted to drugs, they will exhibit a variety of physical symptoms. If you start to notice these symptoms, it is not uncommon for an addict to explain them away and create lies and reasons for these changes. There are some physical side effects that go along with certain drugs. Others can be exhibited regardless of what drug the addict is using. The changes to look for include:

  • Glazed or bloodshot eyes
  • Dilated or constricted pupils (this will only occur when the person is high)
  • Loss of appetite
  • A noticeable weight loss in a very short period of time.
  • Certain drugs will cause rashes and sores on the person’s face.
  • Bruises on the arms, mostly over the veins. These will appear if the person is using IV drugs.
  • Infections inside and around the mouth.
  • Burn marks on the lips from smoking out of a pipe.
  • Stuffy, red, chapped nostrils
  • Constant sniffing
  • Eyes rolling in the back of the head
  • Passing out while sitting down or standing up
  • The inability to walk in a straight line

Behavioral Changes

The more a person becomes dependent on the drugs, the more their behavior and habits will change. The drugs can change the way the brain focuses and forms coherent thoughts. Different drugs can affect people in different and dangerous ways. Regardless of the drug, the changes in an addict’s behavior are often the same. Some of the behavioral changes include:

  • Irritability even when there is nothing wrong
  • Becoming aggressive for no reason
  • Changes in personality and attitude
  • Loss of interest in things that they used to love doing
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • They start hanging around with new friends
  • The stop hanging around with old friends
  • Inability to hold a job
  • Financial problems
  • Being involved in criminal activity and their very first arrest
  • Staying up all night and sleeping all day
  • Excessive talking or talking really fast
  • Speaking nonsense
  • The inability to sit still
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Paranoia

What To Do if You Suspect That a Loved One is Addicted to Drugs

If you notice that a family member or loved one is exhibiting many of the symptoms listed above, chances are they have a drug problem. The sooner you confront them with your suspicions, the sooner you can try to help. It is not uncommon for an addict to lie and deny, however, the only way to save their life is to push them to get the help that they need.

If you are unable to get through to them, you may need to seek professional help. There are several agencies who have experience working with addicts, that can help you get through to your loved one. In some cases an intervention or even help from the police and the courts is necessary to get an addict to agree to get help with their addiction. If you can get an addict to agree to go to treatment, you are essentially saving their life.

The Difference Between COPD vs CHF

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) both are debilitating and leave you with shortness of breath. These two serious conditions share symptoms and common risk factors, but you should be aware that the causes, treatments and prognosis of each differ significantly.

COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

COPD is a term for serious respiratory conditions of several types that block airflow to the lungs. The two main conditions of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Regarding effects of bronchitis, the airways connecting your trachea to your lungs become inflamed. Emphysema is a dysfunction that occurs when serious damage occurs to the tiny air sacs in your lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. These both leave lungs unable to work fully, making it very difficult for the patient to breathe.

CHF Congestive Heart Failure

CHF or congestive heart failure occurs when your heart becomes too weak to pump blood through your body. If your blood isn’t pumped out of the heart effectively, then unfortunate fluid levels build up or can become congested. When blood backs up or develops blood pools in the heart, the heart beats harder and faster and expands to handle the greater blood volume in it. This makes heart failure much worse.

Similar symptoms

Wheezing and shortness of breath are shared symptoms of both COPD and CHF. Breathing difficulties are developed following any physical activity and have a tendency to develop gradually. Initially you may be out of breath after simple activities such as climbing a set of stairs. As COPD and CHF each worsen, wheezing and shortness of breath occur with very little physical effort.

Chronic coughing is a main symptom of COPD. The cough sometimes brings up mucus but can also in the alternative be a dry cough. People with CHF also tend to have a dry, but one that produces sputum. Sputum is the coughed up mucus that may contain bacteria, blood, or pus.

COPD could produce chest tightness. CHF doesn’t lead to chest tightness, but you may feel the sensation of your heart beating irregularly or very rapidly.

COPD and CHF develop from different causes. The most common cause of COPD is smoking. While a medical history of smoking doesn’t mean absolutely you’ll get COPD, it certainly increases the likelihood of developing dysfunctional respiratory problems. Smoking is also a risk factor for CHF and heart disease, not to mention the high risk for lung cancer.

COPD may be attributed to secondhand smoke or inhaling chemicals in your workplace, but a congenital family history of COPD can also increase your likelihood of developing it.

Heart failure can be caused by coronary artery disease (CAD). This heart disease occurs when one or more blood vessels in the heart become blocked. This usually causes heart attacks. Other causes of heart failure include diseases of the heart valves, high blood pressure, and diseases of the heart muscle itself.

Treatment and Lifestyle Changes

There is no cure for either COPD or CHF. Treatment with medication is necessary to slow progression of the disease and manage symptoms. Smoking contributes to COPD and CHF; therefore quitting smoking will improve your health, whatever your condition happens to be at the time.

Physical activity strengthens the heart and lungs, but COPD and CHF will definitely limit the types of exercises you can perform. Discuss safe activities with your physician, and understand precautions you should take.

Summary of Disease Differences

Both COPD and CHF can only be treated for symptoms. Therefore, prevention is the key to both diseases and your capability of a long healthful life.

What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition you may suffer from if acid from your stomach flows back up the esophagus into the mouth. The condition is diagnosed by your family physician, and sometimes your dentist. The reason why dentist notice this condition is because the acid from the stomach can eat away at the enamel of your teeth. Sometimes ulcers will form in the mouth as well if the condition is severe. Receiving proper treatment for this condition fast is essential for protecting your esophagus and oral health from damage.

What are the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease?

Some of you may know gastroesophageal reflux disease as heartburn. That is because the condition can cause a burning sensation in the chest, which usually always occurs after eating foods that do not agree with you. Other common symptoms that come with this condition are:

  • Trouble swallowing
  • Sensation of something stuck in your throat
  • Chronic coughing
  • Breathing difficulty due to inflammation of the airways
  • Trouble sleeping due to acid coming up the throat while you are laying down
  • Weight loss from not wanting to eat with the condition

What causes this condition?

The condition is caused by sphincters in the esophagus relaxing too much and staying open instead of closing up like they are suppose to during digestion. Conditions that cause the sphincters to relax too much are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Cancer of the esophagus
  • Obesity
  • Lack of bowel movements
  • Sluggish digestive system

With that said, smoking, drinking, drug abuse, certain medications and overeating can cause the condition also known as GERD to wreck havoc on your body. This is why some doctors commonly recommend lifestyle changes first before prescribe medications to help treat the condition.

What lifestyle changes can be made to help rid GERD?

One of the biggest causes of GERD is overeating, or eating too much of a healthy diet. Simply changing your diet up and consuming healthier whole foods that nourish and heal the body is one of the ways to rid the condition for good. Whole foods consist of fruits and berries, fresh vegetables, grains and nuts, grass fed meats, fish, raw dairy products, and healthy fats. Whole foods do not consist of any type of food that contains preservatives, artificial ingredients, dyes, and pesticides. This is because foods that contain those ingredients can usually cause GERD to flare up and worsen. The ingredients also causes cancers and obesity. Another helpful way to rid GERD is by losing the extra body fat through exercising regularly. Other lifestyle changes that can cure the condition are:

  • Quitting smoking and drinking
  • Changing medications
  • Eating less acidy foods

What are the treatment options for GERD?

If lifestyle changes alone do not help rid GERD, your doctor may recommend over the counter or prescription anti acid reducers. However, a series of test will need to be done first to help diagnose the condition so the proper treatment can be given. Those test include:

  • Upper endoscopy
  • pH probe test
  • Xrays
  • Manometry test

Bottom Line for GERD

If you suspect you may be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease it is essential that you make an appointment with your doctor to get a proper diagnoses and treatment plan. Leaving the condition untreated could lead to your esophagus becoming damaged. If that happened you may end up needing surgery to repair it. With that said, surgery is usually unlikely because again this condition is most of the time easily treated with lifestyle changes and acid reducers.

World No Tobacco Day

Image result for world no tobacco day

Every day people are dying from tobacco use. In totality annually tobacco use is responsible for 6 million deaths every year. Some experts estimate that by 2030, the average casualties from tobacco will rise to 8 million per year. With 1 million dollars per hour going to tobacco product advertising, it’s no wonder the statistics continue to climb. Decreasing the appeal aspect of tobacco to the general public is inherently important.

Since 1987, the World Health Organization otherwise known as WHO has sponsored the annual awareness day called World No Tobacco Day and put the spotlight on what tobacco use causes in regards to health. Health problems such as, cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease and numerous others have all been attributed to tobacco use. This year’s theme for WHO targets the advertising that makes tobacco so “attractive.” Go plain!

Ousting the Sparkle

Like every savvy business owner knows, marketing is vital to product profitability. Not surprisingly tobacco companies do as well. For years unique, inviting slogans, branding and bright colors have drawn in old and young consumers.

World No Tobacco Day, May 31, brings honesty and accountability into the marketing machine of the tobacco industry–by encouraging plain packaging globally. Plain packaging encompasses the measures put forth to ban or limit logos, colors, brands or info of a promotional nature on products made from tobacco. Limiting attractive labeling through plain text and emphasizing the health risks involved has actually seen a noticeable drop in tobacco use in Australia. Who knew utilizing standard colors and fonts on packaging could be so effective! It apparently works.

Worst of the Worst

Is tobacco a threat to your quality of life? Millions of people are negatively impacted by loss of loved ones via short-term and long-term health problems that unfold from tobacco use. Below is a list of the top four worst diseases caused by tobacco:

#1. Lung Cancer- If you or someone you love struggles with tobacco use, it can become a frightening thing. A total of 87 percent of deaths caused by lung cancer is directly related to cigarette smoking. Smoking really does smoke you!

#2. COPD- While you may have occasionally seen the commercials about COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, you might not have known that 80 percent of all COPD cases are caused by cigarette smoking. This disease makes it difficult to be active, and can be exhausting on the body, and your personal life. It’s also the third leading cause of death in the United States.

#3. Heart disease- No organ is left untouched when it relates to tobacco. A narrowing of your arteries can occur because of smoking. This can block the flow of oxygen blood to your heart. A study showed that when smoking decreased in the U.S. heart disease rates followed suit. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in America.

#4. Stroke- It’s all about the arteries, or in this instance–those damaged by smoking. As previously mentioned tobacco use can block the flow of blood to vital organs. When blood flow to the brain is temporarily blocked this is called a stroke. It damages brain cells, triggers paralysis, slurred speech, an alteration of the brain function and may lead to death. It also is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.

Stopping the Flow

World No Tobacco Day is all about bringing positive change through application. If you want to stop tobacco from impacting your life, know the health risks. Nix the tobacco and decrease the chance that you or someone you love becomes another sad statistic!

How can you diagnose a drug allergy

Switching or starting a new drug prescribed by a doctor can be scary with the long line of side effects that come along with most of them these days. One of the possible serious side effects being a drug allergy, which can cause severe and even life threatening side effects.

With that said, when a drug allergy occurs symptoms appear within an hour, but in rare cases allergic reactions can occur with prolong use of a drug as late as a month. Either way, knowing the side effects of a drug allergy is a helpful way to diagnose one.

What are some of the side effects of a possible drug allergy?

Some of the most common side effects of a drug allergy are:

  • Constant runny nose
  • Swelling in the face and body
  • Watery itchy eyes
  • Breathing complications such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and an asthma attack
  • High fever
  • Skin reactions such as rashes and hives

Rare, but a severe condition that can occur with a drug allergy is anaphylaxis, which is a condition that causes side effects such as:

  • Tightening of the airways
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal discomforts
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Unbalanced blood pressure levels
  • Irregular bowel movements
  • Headaches
  • Dehydration

Reactions that occur from a drug allergy weeks or even months later from long exposure to a medication can cause drug allergies known as:

  • Serum sickness that causes flu like symptoms
  • Drug-induced anemia causing fatigue and blood loss
  • Nephritis a condition that causes inflammation of the kidneys
  • Drug rash eosinophilia and systemic symptoms also known as DRESS

What should occur if a drug allergy develops?

If a drug allergy occurs or you are experience a negative reaction to it, you must call a doctor or seek out medical attention immediately. Some allergic reactions to medications can cause death if not caught and treated in time.

With that said, if the allergic reaction is occurring rapidly just dial 911 from your home phone, cell phone or any landline. Medical responders can reach you faster than you can reach a hospital, which increases your chances of stopping the reaction sooner rather than later, and in life threatening cases saving your life.

What are some end thoughts to keep in mind?

Some end thoughts to keep in mind with a drug allergy are sometimes mood changes can be one of the side effects of a drug allergy, but are rare. Muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, high white blood cell counts, extreme fatigue and heart complications are also rare, but possible allergic reactions that can occur with medications, which are also important to keep in mind and tell your doctor.

Remember, every bit of information you remember and can give your doctor will help diagnose your drug allergy. After a proper diagnosis, your doctor will take you off the drug and prescribe you a new one to help get you feeling better.

Possible causes of autism

Combined Causes

It is very important that condemnation should not come prior investigation, as William Paley once pointed out. With that in mind, some have posited autism derives from several different things working together, rather than a singular distinct cause. Factors could include:

  • Frigid, Or Absent, Parenting
  • Too Much Technology Too Soon
  • Unproven Medical Techniques
  • Genetic Proclivities
  • Health And Nutrition
  • Poverty

Causes Examined

One of the originally suspected culprits of autism was defined as “refrigerator mother theory“. Autism and schizophrenia used to be often diagnosed together. Since then, mechanistic explanations have replaced the theory; but the basic concept is parents don’t properly bring up their children, resulting in this strange behavior.

It’s easy to see how there may be some level of truth in this. Imagine two parents who work online, and are part of the online gaming community. Imagine they have a young child who doesn’t receive proper levels of attention, as a result, and must initiate its own psychological coping mechanisms to feel loved and entertained.

This could very well produce an individual with an inward self-focus who isn’t good at socializing. Feral children have been linked to autism before; and neglect is the prime culprit. However, there are plenty of conscientious parents who love their children and do their best to socialize them, only to see a sudden change later.

There are those who include their children technologically. Smartphones and tablets can be very entertaining. Autistic children definitely love them, and those who aren’t autistic are likewise fascinated. A combination of lackluster parenting and over-stimulation of technology early on could be linked to autistic tendencies in later life, according to Psychology Today.

Another area seen to contribute to autism involves diet. Some foods are bad for those who have autistic behaviors. Gluten and cassein are often good to reduce in the diet of a child with autism.

Medical Complications

Inoculation theory is sound, but doesn’t always take into account certain chemical compounds sometimes contained in vaccines like Measles, Mumphs Rubella (MMR), such as thimerisal, which is mercury-based.

The FDA classifies mercury in greater quantities than 1 part per million as dangerous. While thimerisal has been removed from many vaccines, it still can be found in some. Also, CDC guidelines would have parents provide children 49 doses of 14 different vaccines by age six. If some of those have chemicals in them that are dangerous, it could adversely affect development.

Additionally, 49 vaccines in 6 years averages to a vaccine every 1.46 months. A vaccine introduces an inert antigen into the body’s immune system so the body can “learn” it and be better fortified for when a non-inert antigen infiltrates. What this leads to is a sickness, or pseudo-sickness, more mild than the full-blown sickness, after most vaccinations. Do that every six weeks or so until a child is six, and that could be bad for their developing immune system. It could over-tax it–especially if the child isn’t getting proper nutrition, has distant parents, is using technology too much, or part of a poor household.

When you add to that hereditary links seen to be involved in autistic development, it becomes more clear why autism has jumped from 1 in 10,000 during the 1980s, to about 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls as of 2014.

The solution? Well, there may not be one; but what you can do is have as close a relationship with your children as possible, allow ample time between vaccinations, restrict too much technology, and avoid feeding them too much gluten or cassein–depending on doctor orders, or course.
