On average, someone dies of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) every 36 seconds in the United States equating to 2,380 deaths daily based on 2018 data. Additionally, someone in the US has a stroke every 40 seconds with a death every 3 minutes and 33 seconds. This is based on data from the American Heart Association published in January 2021.

The CDC approximates that 18.2million adults have coronary artery disease, much of which is preventable when caught early enough. Many patients suffer from risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle, making them likely candidates for CVD testing while some patients go undetected because they don’t fit the mold.

Surprisingly, 60% of patients who have heart attacks or strokes have normal lipid levels and 50% have no traditional markers for heart disease. Newer research has shown that atherosclerosis may be a chronic inflammatory disease and the best treatment is to reduce inflammation to normal levels. This highlights the need for testing that goes beyond looking at cholesterol levels.

Cardiovascular Risk Testing has evolved to include inflammatory markers including microalbumin, creatinine, Hs-CRP, LP-PLA2, genetic markers and metabolic syndrome. The Heart-Pro test includes all these markers to provide a full picture of patient risk for CVD.

The PLAC test which is part of the Heart Pro panel can detect if a patient is at risk for rupture-prone plaque. This test will help identify those at-risk patients for plaque rupture. This simple blood test is cleared by the FDA and is a useful aid to assess patient risk of both CHD and ischemic stroke associated with atherosclerosis.
